Why Revelation Was Written For You

How Revelation gives hope to Christians today

Anne Graham Lotz

Guest Contributor

When you consider the book of Revelation, are you immediately overwhelmed by mysterious symbolism and terrifying images? When you read about worldwide earthquakes and trumpeting angels, monstrous beasts, and miracle-working dragons, do you long for the comfort of the Psalms, simple stories of the Gospels, or practical instruction of the Epistles?

You are not alone. For many readers, the primary purpose of Revelation is easily lost in trying to decipher prophecy and predict the future.

If you begin to feel lost in chapters about mysterious lampstands and sacred seals, remember what John tells us in chapter 1:

The primary purpose of Revelation is to reveal “the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ.”

In short, Revelation reveals Jesus!

A Message for Christians Who Suffer

This book was originally written to refocus the early Church on Jesus. When Christians were being fed to lions, nailed to crosses, burned at the stake, and boiled in tar, Revelation was written to provide hope.

It was written by a Christian who himself was suffering because of the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus (Revelation 1:9). It was written specifically to a generation of Christians yet to come who would experience what Jesus described as “great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now—and never to be equaled again” (Matthew 24:21).

{

Revelation was originally written to refocus the early Church on Jesus.

{

This book was also written for you. While not being fed to lions, crucified, or boiled in tar, are you or someone you know suffering in some way? Have you been betrayed by a spouse? Slandered by a friend? Diagnosed with a deadly disease? Have you felt the sting of death as you stood at the grave of a loved one? Struggled with constant pain or disease? Panicked over more bills than you have money to pay? Lost your job? Been persecuted for your proclamation of the truth of God’s Word and His gospel? If you are suffering in a broken world, or know someone who is, then the timing of this study is perfect for you!

A Message for Our Culture Today

How thrilling to study this incredible revelation now, this year! At the very time when so many are struggling, or when you yourself are suffering and in desperate need of real hope. At this very time—when our entire world seems to be teetering on the verge of war, when our streets are filled with anger and anarchy, when Christians around the globe are being persecuted in record-breaking numbers, when corruption and chaos have paralyzed political systems, when lies have been spun as truth, when spiritual darkness and oppressive deception blanket the nations, when wrong is judged to be right and right is judged to be wrong.

Have you wondered, “Is there real hope for the future of my children and my grandchildren?”

The book of Revelation answers with a resounding YES!

Have you asked, “What is our world coming to?”

In 22 chapters, God reveals the end of the story. Even when the worst conceivable nightmares become a reality, there is one splendid, shining, sure hope—not only in the present, but for the future. His name is Jesus!

The Man who entered Jerusalem riding humbly on a donkey in John 12 is revealed to be the same Man who returns to Jerusalem, victoriously riding on a white horse as King of Kings and Lord of Lords! (Revelation 19:11, 16)

The voice that was silenced before His accusers in John 19 thunders with the sound of many waters, drowning out all other voices (Revelation 1:15).

The tortured, mangled, bloodied prisoner on His way to execution is transformed into the Man bathed in glory! (Revelation 21:23)

The crown of thorns is replaced by many dazzling, golden crowns! (Revelation 14:14; 19:12)

The purple robe with which the soldiers mocked Him as king of the Jews has become a robe of light, flashing like lightning in its brilliance! (Revelation 4:2-3)

The hands that were bound and pierced now hold the book by which every person who has ever lived will be judged! (Revelation 20:11-15)

The crowds that gathered in the courtyard of the judgment hall early that Friday morning, jeering, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” are muted as the universe is filled with a roar of acclamation coming from the multitudes of thousands upon tens of thousands as they shout, “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!” (Luke 23:21; Revelation 5:11-12)

{

There is one splendid, shining, sure hope—not only in the present, but for the future. His name is Jesus!

{

This revelation has caused the martyr in the flames of death to see through suffering and into eternity.

It has given…

…strength to the weak,

…faith to the doubting,

…courage to the timid,

…peace to the fearful,

…victory to the defeated,

…hope to the hopeless!

In BSF’s next study, Revelation: The Hope, keep your eyes on Jesus! This Revelation is written for you, and it is glorious!

    I have been wanting to study Revelation in 2024, but have been too busy to make it a priority.
    Last Sunday I woke up hearing the still small voice of God, saying “Don’t wait – jump in” which I took to mean start studying the book of Revelation.
    It turned out that the group would start meeting the next week [now today!] I can’t believe how amazing the timing worked out and I am thankful for the structure and the blessing of BSF to help guide me through these difficult passages.

I have been in BSF since 2011, little did I know that God called me to join only to prepare and equip me for a difficult lonely, painful journey when my dear husband who was also in BSF went to be with the Lord in November 2020. It is coming to 4 years now, but I have seen God at work in my journey, though full of challenges but in Christ I am strengthened day by day. I am excited and look forward to studying the book of Revelations a second time to continue focusing on Jesus my Anchor.

  59. What a beautiful introduction to the study on Revelation. Revelation is all about Jesus and the hope that we have in Jesus that overshadows all the suffering and pain that we suffer in this world. Even if I don’t fathom the prophecies and the mysteries of the beast and the dragon especially the number 666, its ok as I know that I will see my Redeemer with my eyes on the last day and will spend eternity with Him. O death where is your sting! O grave where is your victory! My Redeemer lives. Hallelujah!!!

  60. The first time I studied the book of Revelation I was amazed at how Jesus is deeply revealed! My 3 children were also doing the study in our Student program and at that time they were pre-teens. One evening after class day we had a debrief about the day’s lesson and I was encouraged by the way they were gaining interests in the study. I asked them if they were ready to accept the Jesus they had encountered in the study and unanimously the 3 of them were competing who would say the sinners prayer first. I led them to Christ and they said the sinners prayer and committed to follow Jesus. Right now they are 20, 18 & 16 years old and still loving Jesus. I am looking forward and I am excited about this study in 2024/2025 season. I pray that many will get to know Jesus as he is revealed in this study. Amen!

Please visit join.bsfinternational.org to find an in-person or online group to join. I’ve been a believer all my life, but never really read or been taught the book of Revelation. Seems no preacher/pastor has been able to “go there”. I’m ready to hear it. I have 4 young grandkids and I have devoted the rest of my life to helping them get to know Jesus.

  92. Very relevant for what is happening now in the UK. Revelation encourages us to focus on our eternity rather than our present as this is ultimately where our hope is. Reading the early verses of Romans 5, there is an emphasis on ‘perseverance’ and ‘character’ in hardship and this took me to the essence of faith: i.e. waiting on the Lord and, according to Isaiah 40 waiting on the Lord will renew our strength. I see that as relevant to your comments on the Revelation study on which we are about to embark.

  93. Thank you for explaining why Revelation was written in such simple terms, and it’s relevance to me, ( or anyone else), in the current tumultuous world. It is soothing and gives us hope in a world where it is so easy to lose hope.
    I look forward to the study of Revelation with much excitement & anticipation.

      • I have to say, I completed the study of the book of John in my first go round with BSF, and I enjoyed and valued the experience. But, as an Amillennialist of only a few years, I was worried that the BSF Revelation study was going to only be teaching the Dispensationalist view, and I thought about not participating. I’m relieved that my view will not be excluded from the legitimate opinions of Revelation and what time periods and events it depicts. I’ll be there!

    • Hi Cathy,

      Every study year, Gulf Business Printing researches the services offered by a variety of carriers to find the best way to ship the study guides directly to the BSF members’ front doors. The following factors are taken into consideration:

    • reliability of the carrier
    • the weight of the book and other products
    • the variety of destinations the product will be sent
    • the packaging required to safely and securely ship the products
    • Given these factors, Gulf Business Printing negotiated the best rate to reliably track and send the books to locations domestically and internationally. The cost of shipping is controlled by carriers and subject to change.

A couple of years later a cousin bought me my first bible and simply said,”read it!” As a teenager, Genesis “lost me in all the “begats”; Psalms sounded a bit “lofty and surreal”. Someone said, “try Revelation”. The “scary description” you mentioned was exactly what I was feeling at the time. Reading through the gospels I came across the scripture in the book of Matthew, “ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be opened.” I have been asking, seeking, and knocking since then. Long journey short; God has brought me full circle and blessed me with the privilege of studying Revelation! I look forward hopefully, expectantly, and joyfully to learn even more about our Lord and Savior and the beauty of His Love. God Bless the individuals who put this study together. God Bless BSF.

  208. The BSF on line site is not reliable and it is difficult to navigate. This should be simple in this day and time. I think the organization can/should do better.

    • Hi Kathryn, I’m so sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. BSF continuously works on the website so that it can be used by people all over the world, but I understand that sometimes it can miss the mark. If you have a specific question, please don’t hesitate to use the “Need Help?” widgets and someone will get back to you to help.

  210. Although the imagery in Revelation is vivid and difficult to understand, the message, and the message of the entire Bible, is quite simple. In fact, the message is so simple that it can be summarized with only two words – Jesus wins!

  212. When i found someone talking about Faith , i feel like he might be just talking without experience but for me it’s different !

    It might be unique more than different , because it reflects our weakness and the reason is very simple : even thought God was always faithful with me , my rational thinking still being used by Satan .

    I believe my life is like this because God is God and His work is always over our imagination to show us his sovernighty and Glory

    That’s why i feel like Jesus is using this battle to get more closer to his Word and that’s why , even with my lonelness i’m longing everday to receive his word by you as it really reflects how the word of Jesus gives life and strenghts .

    Thank you for your God work and God bless you

    • I have been a commited Christian for many years. The Holy Bible is my life guide. Jesus is my saviour, my teacher and my anchor. I am an 89 year old Englishman. And now I admit that the last time I read the book of Revelation it sounded to me like the ravings of a mad man and utterly incomprehensible.
      Why, when I hold so dearly to the New Testament and, particularly to the book of John, which not only so clearly says who Jesus is, but tells the world who Jesus himself says he is.
      What am I missing? Is this John, the writer of Revelation, the same man who began the inspiring fourth gospel with the words, “In the beginning was the Word….

      • Jim – you are not alone. We can pray together that God will reveal exactly what He wants us to learn about Him from this year’s study. We may not unlock all of the mysteries of the end times, but if we learn one new aspect of His character and draw one step closer to Him, this Revelation year will be worth it. Praying for you!

      • Revelation takes us through the great tribulation with all its woes and the final fire that all unbelievers will face for eternity. The book reiterates the fall of Satan and the doom he and his angels are bound for. We are shown the duties of all creatures and angels of heaven and the promises of the saints that will live forever with Jesus in the New Jerusalem. Like John, we find it hard to describe what we read in the book of Revelation.
