How to be a biblical thinker

When God’s purpose feels unclear

From Hollie Roberts – BSF Executive Director

What is God’s purpose in sin, suffering, or judgment? How should we approach challenging aspects of God’s character

Executive Director Hollie Roberts encourages us to start “thinking biblically” about these and other questions. She explores the metaphor of God as the “potter,” and why we can trust the ultimate design He has in mind.

Hollie Roberts

BSF Executive Director

Hollie Roberts stepped into the Executive Director role in September 2021 after serving as BSF’s Chief Field Development officer. Hollie and her husband Kevin have two sons, a daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren.

Amen .

Translation: I can understand when I see the potter molding. It teaches us that God is molding us in our walk. Sometimes I have felt still, but other times, restless. When we study His Word, it gives us confidence and encouragement. Even in whatever circumstances we may be going through, He is in control of our lives. To God be the glory forever. Amen.

One of the ones I received was’God has already prepared the way, He’s just preparing you’. Then this evening, I watched this video. Our God is so patient with us, that He even repeats himself. How amazing.

  16. This visual of a potter preparing and shaping and firing the clay really has created a truth for me to ponder. During the drying time- I have felt abandoned or punished and sometimes forgotten. It can be scary knowing the fire is next. It helps me meditate on what God has next for me and am I surrendering to His purpose and use of me. It helps me remember others are at different stages in the Potters hands, just like me. Instead of being hurt, offended or judgemental- to anticipate what beauty God has in store for them and admire where we all are in the process. Thank you for sharing this video with us!

Do you think my heart is made of brass, or stone? After many years of being exercised up, and down in the spirit – I had become strong. God delivered me out of my circumstance – not by fixing the marriage, but by fixing me. I was the clay God was molding to be a useful vessel for his kingdom. Now I can speak into people lives to encourage them in their circumstances. This is a life-journey. Let us remain on the wheel, and let God do his work, and we be that vessel he can use. Thank you Hollies.

Especially in those moments when the world is crashing down around me and nothing I can do will fix it, change it, help those involved or even myself. 125. When we think biblically, we thank our Lord for softening us with the water of Spirit to be the clay to be shaped and to be transformed through fire of Spirit into His vessels – His priceless vessels do NOT need a worldly label.

When we think biblically, we take delight in the Lord, not the in the sense of superiority. The biblical thinking differs from the moralistic thinking in that the moralistic get contentment from self-achievement with the joy found in the sense of superiority. But when we think biblically, we know we are no better than others, and any kind of so called superiority is God’s grace, and until we forget about self-achievement and turn to Lord and think of His love, glory and beauty, we are unable to love at all. And we are not ‘fallen from grace’, because we think biblically, knowing its ‘through the Spirit’ and ‘by faith’. (Galatians 5)

When we think biblically, we may have the same courage and mercies as Elijah and the poor widow had – when we find ourselves as frustrated as Elijah, we still remember His will to bless others, the poor widow and her son, those even more needy; or when we find ourselves as needy as the poor widow, we would still like to feed the other one first, then to ourselves. Lord is merciful, when we are merciful, we are like HIM. Biblical thinking is centered on the story of Jesus Christ, Son of God, who died in the age of 33, and died in shame.

    • I’m not a leader in BSF, but a leader in other areas of life. Thank you for this wonderful lecture and presentation on the Potter and the clay and Biblical Thinking. I was in BSF from 1989 to 2016. Then I got back in this year. I’ve loved the study so far and am grateful to God for all the ways He has maintained the integrity and sound teaching of this organization. I especially loved the illustration of the fence posts as His attributes of protection. I got into BSF in 1989 after my 16-year old son was killed in an accident. I was a young Christian of 4 years at that time. BSF helped to ground me in the truths of Who God is and bring healing to my heart during one of the most painful times of my life. I praise God for all the faithful leaders of BSF and for His continued faithfulness to BSF.

Indeed, the point that the clay does not question the Potter resonates with me, particularly when I struggle with unjust things that have happened to me, yet God wants me to forgive and I have been resisting. Also the point about God using our circumstances and people to shape us, and receiving the moment, and not resisting the lessons.

  142. Dear Ms. Hollie Roberts,
I just watched & listened to your message, on how to be a better “Biblical Thinker.” I absolutely loved that you reminded us as Christians about God being the Potter, and we are the Clay, but more importantly do we consistently trust in God for him to shape and form us for what he personally has in mind for us individually.
As Christians God definitely wants us to go through him & with him, But we have to as human beings to be able to let God be the one who is shaping & forming us and not the other way around.
I would Love to be able to hear more from Hollie Roberts as a person who has been & is a part of BSF more often if possible. Hollie has a gift to speak, and share & pass on God’s word and what he has in mind for all of us at the end of the day. I pray that we can have that opportunity more often to hear from Ms. Hollie Roberts if at all possible. Thank you and God Bless! Lori Hothan

The statement of her wanting to be the potter and not the clay was telling for me. Yes the potter does have the skills and taking clay and forming it into something useable is amazing. We are the clay and God knows the outcome. He is molding us. She went on to be thankful for the sources that guide us like the Bible and BSF. The “moulding” process is no easy path or experience for the clay. I wish the process can be shorter and less excruciating but I am reminded to trust the potter who has the end in mind while He meticulously wedges, cut, and mould me. The heat from the fire at times can be unbearable, but without the heat, the clay will remain soft and useless. I pray that God will continue to strengthen me and grant me the patience to be still in this process.

    • This doesn’t seem grounded in Biblical history to me. What do we do with Jacob who physically wrestled with God, what do we do with the Psalms filled with crying out to him, what do we do with Jesus who said take this cup from me as he wrestled in prayer with what lay ahead? Taking away our humanity and agency in our lives in this way, making us only lump of clay, doesn’t make us more like Jesus or bring God more glory. We are stewards and priests and need to view our lives as opportunities to grow in these roles. I love BSF and am praying for all BSF leadership and member to have wisdom as they study God’s Holy Word this year. Would love this talk to be more solidly grounded in His Word, a larger portion than just the one phrase.

Just like Catherine, as a potter, loves and sees her clay as a great, complete and finished masterpiece… so does God loves, shapes and sees us in His own image and likeness as the righteousness in His son, Jesus.

  240. Jesus…The Potter*
When a potter makes jars out of clay, he has a right to use the same lump of clay to make jars for different purposes. God does not make useless pottery. While some pots may be for decoration, others may be used for work, and others may be used to show the skill and power of the potter. The point is, all pots have a purpose, and so do you.
In life, we all have some pain. This pain often causes us to self-protect and isolate ourselves to prevent further hurt. Sadly, the pain from these wounds distort the truth that God loves us and wants to have a close relationship with us…this very truth is what can set us free! When we have trust in God, and become focused on Him, we create an opportunity for God to heal our broken heart and make us a blessing to others.
The answer ultimately lies in finding the courage to surrender yourself, and your problems, to God. Reading God’s word and allowing Him to be your potter and renew your thinking requires making a conscious choice, and a commitment, to make God a priority in your life.
God wants to partner with each of us, but it first requires that we must yield to Him and trust in the future destiny He has for us. We must have faith in God and His love for us because faith is the key ingredient in our clay. God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6).
This new life in God will help you with your new life on earth, because your mind will become focused on good things and the love of God. If you completely trust God and surrender to His love, you may even become a source of clay that God will use to help others who may be in your similar situation. Because you have been there in the darkness, you may become a living testimony of God’s redemptive love and power that may help others begin a new life and walk in His light. You must know and remember that God does work in mysterious ways and in His own time, so do not ever doubt Him!
If you want to take the next step, read Isiah 45:9 where we are compared to the potter’s clay. We, the clay cannot be in control and tell the potter how to shape us. We must make a commitment and yield to the potter by giving Him our total effort and trust, that with our faith and time for healing, we will become like a functional pot with purpose, so that may be used in the service to others.
Remember, God does not make useless pottery!

  261. Very powerful. How incredibly ridiculous is it to imagine the clay quarreling with the potter? Or attempting to resist the potter’s will? The clay is worthless and unusable apart from the potter’s design and development.

You have offered me a visual reminder of what it means to submit to transformation. I pray that God will bring it to mind during the hard moments.

    Thank you.
