3 Ways to Experience Lasting Newness This Year

HOW JESUS MAKES ALL THINGS NEW TODAY

Hollie Roberts

BSF Executive Director

Happy New Year!

I love the new year. I love the idea of all things being made new. I see so much potential. I confess I am tired of the brokenness of this world and the broken hearts that inevitably follow. Bring on the new.

During a particularly painful time in my life, I learned something “new” about myself. I was sharing with a friend my plan to tear out the tile floor in my house and install a new one. Without missing a beat, she said, “You don’t want a new floor; you want your life fixed. A new floor won’t fix your feelings of brokenness.”

It was a cold, hard truth, but she was right. I was looking for something new as a substitute for the brokenness in my life.

Since then, I have considered my friend’s comment at various times throughout my life. It seems I tend to seek out things to fix when my world feels especially broken. Over the years, however, God has continued teaching me not to be distracted by the “new and now” but to pursue the new and lasting.

{

I was looking for something new as a substitute for the brokenness in my life.

{

I think my love of all things new makes the promises of Scripture so appealing. God’s Word promises His compassions “are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23). God “has given us new birth into a living hope” (1 Peter 1:3). And, of course, who could forget the great promise of Revelation 21:5? “He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’”

Say no more; I am in! How long, O Lord, before you make all things new?

As we wait for God’s sure and certain promises to be fulfilled, how do we properly navigate the very real tension we feel of living in a broken world while simultaneously longing for a new and lasting reality?

As you start this new year, consider three opportunities you have to bring lasting, eternal newness to each new day.

1. Be made new in the attitude of your mind

Today is a great day to forgive those who have hurt you, to encourage someone who is hurting, to confess your bitterness, to turn the other cheek, or to hold your tongue in that conversation (yes, you know which one!). Each day is an opportunity to be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

2. Sing to the Lord a new song

Today is a great day to ascribe to the Lord the glory He is due. This is more than just playing worship music when you get ready in the morning. To ascribe to the Lord the glory He is due is to change your entire vocabulary and perspective on life. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. Words filled with hope and praise flow forth from hearts of praise. Grumbling, complaining, and even pessimism in our speech do not ascribe to the Lord the glory He is due. These simply reveal the condition of our hearts. Today is a great day to sing to the Lord a new song

3. Proclaim the good news of the kingdom

Today is a great day to proclaim—in word and deed—the good news of the kingdom of God. Bring words of hope and peace into hard situations. Bring love to the broken and hurting. Like the apostles, dedicate yourself to teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Messiah. Write Scripture on your heart. Always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that you have.

Today is a great day to begin practicing each of these attitudes and actions.

And this is where BSF comes in. Through BSF’s daily study rhythm, weekly discussion, and in-depth teaching, we are inspired by God’s Word to seek the new and lasting every day. In a culture utterly inundated with more information than we could possibly ingest, we must intentionally seek out, reflect on, and readily share with others the only information that has true, lasting, and eternal impact. This is why BSF exists.

Each day, you face steady competition for your precious and limited time. How you spend your days throughout this year will ultimately shape who you become by the end of this year!

Will you join me in making the most of each day this year, even as Jesus makes all things new?

  1. Hollie, I have printed your “Three Ways to Experience Lasting Newness” because you so touched the part of me that wants to respond to those who challenge me. My hands are full as a full-time Caregiver to my husband with dementia, my mind is full of cascading medical appointments, tests, and financial decisions, but my heart is Welded to our Lord. I want to be able to offer the hope and love He wishes and you’ve given me the PLAN. THANK GOD!

  2. Thank you Hollie, I am reading this late. But it is always so encouraging to hear your blog. I realised that in the midst of the disappointments and challenges of the everyday life, my focus should be my relationship with our Maker. I should fix my eyes on Him and build on what truly matters to Him. I will be made NEW in the attitude of my mind. I will sing a NEW song to the Lord. I will proclaim the good news of His kingdom to the world. Help me Dear Lord Jesus . Make these a NEW habit for this new year

Thank you for this inspiring message! I am also very tired of the broken world we live in and pray that the Lord Jesus comes quickly! BSF is the perfect way for me to stay in the Word and be transformed by the renewing and attitude of my mind in Christ Jesus. Keeping my mouth shut at appropriate times is a challenge for me but in His strength, I will listen more and speak less. Praise be to our Lord Jesus Christ!

Have been reading to lift my soul, am trusting God will come through, even if He has to drag me.

    • Under the rug is a terrible place to be. Trusting in God will help, patience is required. I would like to recommend red light therapy if you have access to it. I too feel low & red light therapy helps. You can pray the entire time you have treatment!

    • God speaks through His Word—He simply asks us to hear it and take it to heart. When we share His truth, He faithfully works beyond what we can see. Trust is like a staff you can lean on as you journey uphill with God. If you are trusting in Him consistently, the staff will bear as much of your weight as needed. Lean on, trust, and be confident in Him with all your heart and mind.

  19. Thank you Miss Hollie for being authentic and transparent. These words struck a chord within me: “To ascribe to the Lord the glory He is due is to change your entire vocabulary and perspective on life. Out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks. Words filled with hope and praise flow forth from hearts of praise.” Why is it easier to complain than to voice our worship and praise? It definitely is a heart condition! Thanks again for your insight!

  29. Every morning that God allows me to wake up, I know how blessed I am, and I realize He has given me a new attitude for the day. Yes, singing is an excellent way of clearing my mind and setting it to God’s tune when I can Sing to the Lord A New Song. Thank you, Hollie! Lastly, isn’t this Lesson 15 on Chapters 10 and 11 more about Proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom even when we do not understand everything He is trying to tell us? I am assured that in His Time, he will reveal the mysteries we humans want to know… NOW. It is called “Patience,” something I am lacking.

As someone remarked about Revelation… I used to think it was all gloom and doom, too. But during this study, I see it exactly as John tells us in Revelation 10.9 …but ‘in your mouth it will be as sweet as honey.’” I might not understand all of His Word, but those few words I think I “got it,” and it is up to us to spread the sweet, sweet Word of Our Lord. Praise God!

Thank you, Hollie, for your heartfelt words and love for Jesus! I appreciate and look forward to your words of wisdom every month. It is a joy to be in BSF, knowing God is always there to give us hope!

  39. Loved the 3 points, and yes, they are opportunities as the Holy Spirit provides. The renewing of the mind, I shall stay in the scriptures! Singing a new song is one I always thought of as worship music. I love your take on this because I’m thinking that is where my gift lies. I pray for opportunities to proclaim His word. Specifically the Gospel. Hope fully He uses me in my speech. At 82 years old, you have lots of time to think on this, but not much opportunity.
His mercies are new every morning! My main thought for 2024 was “Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow” That sustained me so well I think if He is willing I will keep that thought for 2025!
Praise be to Jesus for healing, for fixing our brokenness! Amen!

  72. Dear Holly. So thankful for this reminder.
«Over the years, however, God has continued teaching me not to be distracted by the “new and now” but to pursue the new and lasting.».
Dear Holly, I remember too an extremely painful period of my life. I wanted out of it. But it did not help me to think like that. It was when I read 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 that I saw I had the wrong perspective, I needed to lift my eyes from my earthly «now» to the everlasting.
My personality, even from childhood days, is wanting to focus on «what’s next». I continue to struggle with this attitude, but have learned it is in the painful «now» that I draw closer to Jesus, and need to sit still and rest in His presence – until comforted and stilled. And can at last say, «Thank you Jesus». I love you.

God has a plan for each of us ,all we have to do is be willing vessels. There is hope for God’s People ,great is thy Faithfulness and “New Mercies I See”.

  79. Thank you so much Hollie. I will read this often this year to remind me of the kind of person for the Lord and testimony to others this year I want to be. Glad I read it in the beginning of this year. The Lord has been so good to me and I pray for BSF each week it has been a blessing to me for over 20 years BSF has kept me growing in Gods wonderful Word and focused on what is truly important.

  80. This has hit deep especially the sentence “how you spend your days throughout this year ultimately shape who you become by the end of this year. Through BSF I have gained such a deep understanding of God’s word. My prayer life has greatly improved as I know it is only God who will protect and save me, my family and friends in a world that is going out of control. He is the only constant so I praise and honor Him every day for His goodness. He is in control and I surrender all to Him.

  84. Hollie, What a blessing you have in your Christian, pragmatic friend. “A new floor will not fix your feelings of brokenness.” And how blessed that our Father has provided what will.
Jesus…His instructions and a daily invitation to make all things new in Him.
I love your three opportunities, so beautifully explained, to remind us and help us pursue the new & everlasting.
Thank you so much for this beautiful article, and I look forward to receiving your Newsletter.

  94. Dearest Hollie,
How blessed I am as I ponder your latest blog on Newness! The comment your friend shared with you could have been spoken to me.
“You don’t want a new _______; you want your life fixed. A new ______ won’t fix your feelings of brokenness.”

It was a cold, hard truth, to me also (at the age of 77 and 38 years of growing through the blessed teachings of BSF). I have always looked for something new as a substitute for any brokenness in my life. Thank you for a new perspective, a new hope, which I am finding in our study of Revelation. It is such a privilege to study God’s word through the BSF ministry. May He continue to give you wisdom in the truths He gives you to share in a world so badly in need of Him.

  98. Thank you, Hollie Roberts, for the beautiful thoughts on how we can make an impact for Jesus in this New Year, by renewing our minds in scripture, memorization, & giving my heart to Jesus every day! As I read your words, I cried, because it’s so powerful & true!! Knowing Jesus, meditating on His attributes, singing, praying, forgiving, has changed my heart so much. I am so deeply grateful to Him for leading me to BSF so many years ago! To God be the glory for all He has done!

  99. This is wonderful and thank you for the wisdom to change my mind and heart one day at a time. It’s so easy to fall into a trap of feeling sad and lost even though I know how God has been right here and wants more for the time I have left to follow Jesus and see where he leads not where I decide to go

  115. What a great news letter. There is one point that is important to me only because I am particularly dull. Through Christian the growth process, there are underlying truths that evidently go without saying.
But, I am slow at tacit understanding. The thing I couldn’t get, was, that the process of seeing great truths and then doing them from our normal base of energy/ability, from which we normally approach everything, doesn’t really work at its foundation. That forging of “John 15:5 apart from Me you can do nothing “ is a learning curve of ever deeper awareness. And the two step part (if we want to be technical) is 1. that we depend on the cross to crucify, make inactive, the sin nature.. Gal 5:24,25 with Gal 2:20 with 1 Peter 2:24 Christ bore our sin (Greek word applies to both sins and the sin nature) in His body that we might live to righteousness. 2. We depend upon His resurrected life in us to will and to do. Hebrews 12:2 always looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith. (and many other verses) These two steps cannot be over emphasized. The dependent attitude looking unto Jesus has the same importance of plugging some appliance in if you want it to work. I know everyone says, “yeah yeah yeah .. all that’s a given “. But it has been a difficult road for me to learn this true”connected life “ truth series. It may be that the average Christian doesn’t want to know? That, they are living their own life pursuing their own dreams, and they have money . Like the church at Laodicia . Idk. All blessings to u you you ❤️

    • I always make the same resolution every year and that is “to make my BEST better.” I love how I have grown in my relationship with the Lord and look forward to my continued growth. I thank God that my two grown children are believers and serving the Lord in their own ways, and I pray for their continued growth as well. I recently moved from CT to CA starting a brand-new life at 87 years old! Both my kid live in CA and have been after me to move here. I am very happy in my new home and praise God for His continued blessings on my life. I just enjoyed the best Thanksgiving/Christmas celebration Ever with my children!
