How the Old Testament Speaks Today

3 Reasons to Study BSF’s Exile & Return

Bryan Belknap

BSF Media Director

Back when I still had a full head of hair, I wrote skits for youth ministry. One of my favorites was called It’s Malachi! In it, the character Kevin—a recently departed snowboarder—arrived in heaven to be greeted by none other than the Old Testament prophet Malachi. During Kevin’s heavenly “orientation,” Malachi eagerly asked him questions about the book bearing his unforgettable name: What did he think of it? Did he have a favorite part?

As their conversation unfolded, it became clear that Kevin had never actually read the book of Malachi. With a touch of disappointment, the prophet asked, “So you devoted your life to God, followed His Son, and didn’t even read the whole book?” Caught off guard, Kevin could only respond, half-jokingly, “Can you plead the Fifth up here?”

Soon, Bible Study Fellowship will begin a new study, Exile & Return, featuring eight Old Testament books of history and prophecy that cover Israel’s exile in Babylon and their eventual return to the promised land. While you have probably read Daniel, Esther, and (at least parts of) Ezekiel, I would be greatly impressed if you can quote passages from Haggai, Ezra, or our good buddy Malachi. (I sure can’t.)

{

These books speak to people who feel displaced, weary, or like they’re waiting for something more.

{

So, beyond the obvious personal blessing that comes from reading every page of God’s inspired Word, why should someone living in the 21st century read a bunch of books written approximately 2,500 years ago?

Glad you asked! Exile & Return isn’t just an Old Testament history lesson. These books speak to people who feel displaced, weary, or like they’re waiting for something more (which sounds like my experience today). Walking through these often-ignored pages will uncover the ache of living in a world that is not our home while continually pointing toward our hope of Jesus’s return. Surprisingly, this study reveals the unwavering heart of our Savior, who meets us in every chapter of our lives.

Here are three reasons you’ll love Exile & Return.

1. Exile & Return is written for exiles.

Did you realize that believers live like exiles right at this very moment? While far too many people around the world currently live in physical exile from their homeland, every follower of Jesus Christ awaits their true homeland with God in His kingdom. While Revelation: The Hope addressed this, we must still find a way to live for God’s glory in our present “exiled” circumstances. That is exactly where Ezekiel, Daniel, Esther, and Malachi found themselves. Even in exile, living far from their true home as strangers in a strange land, God did not call His people to hide. Instead, He instructed them to plant gardens, build homes and hold weddings (Jeremiah 29:5-7).

What does this mean for us today? As we struggle with life far from our heavenly home, 1 Peter 2:11-12 reminds us of our mission, “Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.”

That said, how do we “live such good lives…that they may see your good deeds and glorify God”? Exile & Return provides practical answers.

2. Exile & Return addresses deeply relatable situations.

Despite being written more than two millennia ago, the books in this study speak directly to our life circumstances today. We could all benefit from practical lessons on:

  • God using people in the midst of their sin (Ezekiel)
  • God’s complete sovereignty over nations and leaders (Daniel)
  • God’s faithfulness to always keep His word (Ezra)
  • Using influence and position to stand apart for God’s glory (Esther)
  • Prioritizing God over personal comfort (Haggai)
  • God restoring repentant sinners through the redeeming work of Israel’s Messiah (Zechariah)
  • Godly leadership principles (Nehemiah)
  • Standing firm against moral corruption (Malachi)

And these are only a few of the themes Exile & Return will explore. Through BSF’s study, we will learn to place each book within its historical context, while also discovering personal applications that speak to our practical, often desperate needs for godly guidance today.

3. Exile & Return features Scripture Jesus loved.

People love picturing Jesus as the good shepherd. But did you know the “shepherd” reference to the Messiah first appeared in Ezekiel 34?

Jesus loved to quote Old Testament Scripture. In fact, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus declared, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17).”

That means one of Jesus’ goals in coming to earth was to fulfill everything written in Scripture, including the eight books we will explore. His life, teachings, and mission are inextricably linked to and interwoven within the Old Testament. Anyone wanting to gain a complete picture of our Lord and Savior should absolutely study these amazing books.

{

All Scripture is divinely inspired to speak truth to all peoples in all times.

{

In the words of theologian Dr. Carl Laney, BSF’s Exile & Return study will “focus on Jesus, Israel’s Messiah-King, and how His life and ministry are anticipated in Scripture.”

Seeing how the books I often overlook in my study of the Bible strengthen my faith in and appreciation of Jesus has been a blessed shock. To find these books also provide insightful and actionable guidance as situations unfold in my daily life has been nothing short of miraculous, proving once again that all Scriptureeven the most “obscure” verseis divinely inspired to speak truth to all peoples in all times.

That’s something we all need more of in our lives today.

(Knowing I can meet Malachi some day and confidently talk about his book is a nice bonus.)

I don’t know why I’m so surprised that the wisdom in these works are so relevant to our lives today. God continuely amazes me with His precious word. He loves us so much and constantly leads, guides, and directs us through His spirit and His word.

  6. ohh my! here i was, telling myself i am getting there; having been in BSF for over 20 years. i just realized i am yet to know the Word of God. i find pleasure in reading the Psalms & Proverbs only in the Old Testament, turning a blind eye to the rest. i read here and there as part of the church daily reading program. however, i have come to realise that with every study, that is the exact circumstances i will be facing in this life and God provides answers through BSF for example: i studies the Book of Genesis while i had just lost my mother and became pregnant barely 3 months later.i depended so much on her for prayers etc but through the study, i learnt to depend on God. my dad was so concerned for my health and the baby’s health because i was over 40 years but through study, i learnt God sustained me and there’s nothing impossible with Him. i could go on. Looking forward to this study – i am unequally yoked and pray that through this study, one day, just one day, they will see my good deeds and glorify God.

  7. How very true, that although some things in the Old Testament are hard to understand, the basic principle that God alone needs to be the one that we worship and serve. I am currently reading the book of Jeremiah and looking for those basic principles of listening to God and obeying the Spirits voice.

  8. A Time to Build…

Don’t we, and our world, need this study right now?! I know I do, to become more humble and Christlike and to make sense of all that is going on in the world. I am so thankful Our God is Sovereign, from the beginning of time to the very end … right into eternity.

Thanks to all who have faithfully and diligently worked to make this study possible. May God bless you for doing so, and all of us as we work through it.

I’m excited and cannot wait to get started!

  9. It’s going to be a great study of God’s Word and His people. I want to read it all, meditate much, and make it mine.!

Please help me. “LORD” and “Lord” are different words and have different meanings and relationships. Please please, when quoting Scripture, use the correct word. While both identify God, so does, “The Man Upstairs” identify God.

“LORD” is used much more frequently than “Lord” in the books we are studying. There is a reason for that,

  11. I joined BSF for the first time last year to study the book of Revelation. What a “revelation” that study was for me! I am now looking forward to “Exile and Return”, not only to gain more understanding and appreciation of these amazing (but often overlooked) books, but to strengthen my faith in Christ and appreciation for all that He did (and is doing) for us. Thank you, BSF!

  12. started Bsf 9 years ago, after my wife chose to divorce me after 20+ years of marraige. moved in w a couple for exchange of remodel services for a year.He wanted to go to this study, went w him just for something to do. While in this study, i was really negitive and bitter from the divorce cause i was absolutely sure i would go to the grave w my wife. Even the kids rejected me in this 2 year season i called the dark side.was very angry w my ex and God (cause i married her in His name). After the 2 year season He showerted me w what i called the grace card, which was a supernatural annointing season for 6 months which totally transformed my heart and life. up until that point i was extremely self condemning although i was born again.
since this point in my history ive experianced His true love in ways i never could have of imagined. Then He called me to kids ministry. From day one, i knew i was born to do that ministry. He has given me a supernatural connection w children where each time brings a level of joy thats overwelming.
This study has progressively gotten deeper/richer since i started 9 years ago. When i first began i would do some questions, and some not. even though i could see the incredible giftedness of your writters. each year i would anwser a liitle more. originally i got much more out of the fellowship of the groups than the study. But now im totally blown away w the richness of His Word. Sometimes i feel like im studying like a pastor would! Not a pastor. Feel very privledged to get this much insight into His truths. the depth of harmony is other worldly for me. theres a couple of guys that share this with me in my group also.
i never thought in my life that i could ever have this special posetion of understanding. i see a much bigger picture now of life in His economy, and it makes me so thankful deep in my soull.
thank you all so much for anwsering the call in your gifts. i believe your ministry is a world changer and is so helpful to todays hurting culture!

It started off so beautifully, as with King Solomon’s prayer of the dedication of the temple, to Josiah finding the Law and weeping and rending his garments. But the sovereignty of God reigns throughout, and the return changed Israel forever. I am very excited to study the Exile to learn the whys and wherefores!

Then I continued in Reseda CA, and in Thousand Oaks, and Newbury Park. 34. To say that these 8 Books are very relative to us and the times that we live in now…is an UNDERSTATEMENT! To put a fine point on this…some years ago, I led a Small Group study on just the Book of Esther. As we moved deeper into the study on Esther, I was absolutely stunned and greatly impressed by what hidden secrets and messages that came to light when we followed and looked up the connecting biblical references and footnotes! And when it was finally revealed who “Haman” was a descendant of…it just absolutely “crystalized” how God’s will, plans and promises to us will NOT be overturned by anything or anyone…especially the wicked! I’m now anxious to see what this year’s BSF Study has to reveal in the other 7 Books.

It completes His story by all His prophecies and relevant for how the world still continues from Eden to today. His Sovereignty and foreknowledge relating to the news of the day reinforces His wisdom and grace.
I started BSF in 1994. It has been the very best of Bible teaching. If only I could remember all that I have learned! At 82 I have thought of gifting my place to another. I am sorry, but I am still learning. Online for me saved the day also. I am not nearby where I live now to a location otherwise. Christian my entire life and loved our Lord, but am now really getting to know the God I serve on an entirely different level! Thank you BSF for the tools to a deeper faith and understanding of scripture.

  93. I have found BSF to be an eye-opening experience. I am now staring my 5th year with the group in Ramona. The courses are tough but enlightening. The reason I say tough is because there is so much to learn from sharing, but time constarints almost always interfer. The enlightening part is the comradeship one can develop through fellowship and the fact that you can study to your heart’s content, just know you may now be able to share all you learn in the weekly Bible Studies.

Thank you for the blog. I love how you’ve tied it to our last study on Revelation: The Hope- reminding us as believers we are exiled here as we wait for our glorious home in the New Jerusalem.

Doing the study of Revelation also taught me how interconnected scripture is -both old and new testaments.

This will be my third BSF study and I can already see the connectedness coming through, I cannot wait for September to start the Exile and Return!

  105. Before joining BSF and studying Revelations, I was honestly afraid of what this particular revealed.
I learned instead that it is a book of promise, a book that reveals God’s abiding patience and lavish love for His created beings. He gives us chance after chance, after chance to repent and follow, to “choose” Him. And, fairly, Revelations reveals the final outcome of those who continue to reject Him and see themselves as above His law!
    Thank you BSF!

Luke records that Jesus spoke with Moses and Elijah of his departure (Greek word exodus) on the mount of transfiguration.

Luke also records in Acts 1 that after 40 days with his disciples Jesus ascended into heaven and would erchomai (Greek) come or go or proceed in a cloud as they had witnessed – perhaps alluding to Daniel 7:13 (ESV) “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.

When we finished in 2024, and we were left with Judah being defeated and on the vusp of captivity, I realized that we were stopping right before the greatest come-back story in the Bible! I fell in live with these 8 books many years ago; I needed their truth as I faced a personal come-back story. Ezekiel and Zechariah, in particular, have become very precious to me. Again, the greatest come-back story that has ever happened.
As we grow progressively closer to the greatest come-back story that has not yet happened but absolutely will happen, our gathering together to our Saviour, the bold-yet-imperfect example of these believers these believers will encourage us that God is the master of renewal/recovery/comeback.

I was just in your last Bible study in Revelation .. it’s all good But …
I don’t see the gain to our walk here n now , people need to be taught how to LIVE as a Christian in their new birth Hebrews 11 the great faith chapter speaks of the great things the OT saints did n good n needed to know but further need a good solid foundation.
I’ll stop here , but just my food for thought.
    Godspeed

I just love to read the whole thing and I have learned so much from it .Last week on Sunday I preach a sermon on ” Jesus is the good shepherd”
Points : Jesus as the good shepherds cares for so much for us.
“Jesus as a good shepherd loves us so much”
” Jesus as a good shepherd gives us eternal life ”
Conclusion ” Be faithful until the end and I shall give you a crown of eternal life.
What I missed here is I did not point anything back to the OT ,but through reading this ,I now realize and learn that next time when I prepare a sermon again ,I need to quote a verse in the old testament.
    Thank you so much .

Only two weeks into the study but the lessons are enormous which makes us look for to the next Study, Exile and Return. God just doesn’t punish but He gives warnings to His children to turn back from their wicked ways. He’s a just God and while He warns us of His coming judgment through His prophet, He also promises a restoration plan. Indeed, there’s Hope for the Hopeless!
