3 Reasons to Love BSF’s Revelation Study

Discover hope today and assurance for eternity

Bennett Rolan

BSF Communications Manager

My husband’s career as a football coach has taken us across the country and back. Whether we moved to the desert of southern Utah, or to the bluegrass of Kentucky, I have loved leading Bible study groups wherever God has planted me. I have often repeated this prayer from BSF founder Audrey Wetherell Johnson:

“I love your Word above all things. I would love to spend my life teaching others to find what I have found.”

But when it comes to leading a group through a book like Revelation, I can feel completely ill-equipped. In trying to uncover the mysteries of Revelation, I have explored commentaries, multiple curriculums, and spent time listening to podcasts and sermon series.

In all my searching, I continue to return to my Revelation lessons and notes from BSF’s 2016 study.  I could easily share 15 reasons why I have faithfully packed my well-worn Revelation study book through six cross-country moves. But today, I’ll give you three.

1. You won’t get lost in charts and timelines.

Though many of us may be tempted to use Revelation as a tool to predict the future, Scripture is clear that the timing of Christ’s return is a mystery.

Jesus told us, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Therefore, keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:36-37, 42).

In BSF’s Revelation: The Hope, the lesson questions and notes approach God’s Word with humility, not assuming a complete understanding of mysterious passages.

{

In BSF’s Revelation: The Hope, the lesson questions and notes approach God’s Word with humility...

{

One BSF staff member wrote, “We boldly assert what is unmistakable and graciously discuss what is not as clear. Christians should interpret the Bible according to the literal sense of the author’s intended meaning. We must acknowledge that John may have symbolically described visions too glorious for common language. He also may have offered more exact descriptions to avoid mistaken impressions.”

Through this approach, lesson questions, notes, weekly discussion groups, and lectures serve as a guide through complicated passages.

2. You will find space for honest discussion and differing opinions.

During the 2016 Revelation study, I remember sitting in my discussion group thinking, ‘How is this ever going to work?!” Our group seemed completely divided between two very different viewpoints on a single Revelation passage. In that moment, I was fully expecting the conversation to escalate into an argument. What I witnessed instead was a kind and supportive discussion around a topic that our group found fascinating.

How is this possible? Because BSF approaches Revelation with the viewpoint that “all Scripture is equally true, but not equally clear.” With that humility, BSF carefully presents several prominent perspectives regarding end times theology.

{

What I witnessed instead was a kind and supportive discussion around a topic that our group found fascinating.

{

Discussion groups become a place to learn and grow together, instead of a battleground of opposing viewpoints.

There is no expectation of coming to your group with the “right answers,” just a willing heart to seek God through His Word. By approaching every lesson like an adventure, we find new opportunities to learn from one another each week.

3. You will leave each week loving and longing for Jesus.

At the core of BSF’s Revelation study is a singular focus:Jesus. Since this book was primarily written to comfort and encourage suffering believers, each week’s study is packed with reminders of the joy we find in Christ.

Key themes you’ll discover are:

  • God is in control—He wins!
  • God rights all wrongs and repairs all brokenness. He sets everything straight.
  • Revelation is far more about Jesus’s glory than about future events, symbols, or timelines.

Through Revelation’s 22 chapters (404 verses) you’ll find a single unifying concept—hope.

If you struggle to find meaning in this broken world, then Revelation: The Hope is for you. If your friends or family members wonder how God could possibly be at work today, then Revelation: The Hope is for them.

If I learned one thing from BSF’s Revelation study, it was how to place my hope in the One who promised, “Yes, I am coming soon” (Revelation 22:20a).

Together, as a BSF community, we will learn to pray: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20b).

More to Know About Revelation: The Hope

Did you know that each BSF theme design is carefully crafted to elevate the Scripture we study? This is what you can expect to see during Revelation: The Hope:

The colors: The bright colors in the palette represent our hope in Christ bursting forth to overcome the darkness.

The shapes: You’ll notice that the colorful shapes on our book cover arc to resemble a cross, reminding us that God is in control and Jesus is victorious.

The gradient: Throughout the Revelation study, you’ll notice that decorative shapes move in and out of focus with a gradient effect. The blurred edges that move into crisp lines represent the idea that even though we don’t see clearly today, our future hope is clearly defined in Christ.

  1. At 76 yrs of age, I am a newbie to Bible studies. I loved Revelation. To me, it seemed that Revelation sat in the middle of all the old stories I had learned as a child. With each step, as our studies referenced other verses or stories, it felt as if Revelation was pulling that part of God & His wisdom in, just as a mother hen gathers her chickens under her wings. The way BSF Revelation set-up the weekly studies helped make sense of what I remembered about the Bible.
    It has encouraged me to forge ahead to EXILE & RETURN.

  5. I loved each of these encouraging articles & I feel new courage to continue on. I often feel awkward & don’t express myself as well publicly even though I have filled numerous journals of precious learning privately as I sit at Jesus’s Feet & learn of Him & have experienced such intimacy with God that I have come to Love His Word more & more every day. I long to learn more about Revelations & all that Jesus wanted us to be comforted by knowing & understanding. I love all the suggestions for group discussions & pray for my group that we will develop that supportive harmony that helps us grow together. Thank you for ALL these wonderful uplifting words that have helped me so much to approach these lessons with courage & less anxiety & tools to help me be a better group participant. God bless all these wonderfully talented writers. I appreciate this more than I can express in my words.

The BSF Store button is in the lower section of the left side panel on MyBSF. You may need to expand the left side panel using the three horizontal lines in the upper left corner of the screen, next to the MyBSF logo. The lecture can be found by visiting MyBSF and clicking “Lessons” in the left side panel. Lectures are posted to the previous week’s lesson, so you may need to use the left arrow next to the lesson number to go to the previous week. I hope this helps, and I will be praying for a blessed year of studying Revelation!

  11. I am looking forward to participating in a group discussing the book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Your remarks in his blog are encouraging. Many churches do not teach or preach from this book. Your method of teaching and discussing this book perhaps will open the doors as BSF members share that this book can be studied in a way where people can agree to disagree in love and not in strife. I have studied this book in Bible College and Seminary and again looking forward to being blessed as the Holy Spirit teaches the precious Word of God within the fellowship of BSF. This is my first time in BSF. God bless you!

  14. I am a returning BSF student who has done all the studies except revelation. I began going before I married and then took my 3 boys through the preschool program. I have recently been doing the at Home Bible study with Betty Kilpatrick and Gail O’Neil. I had the privilege of hearing both these women’s lectures on the word of God. When my ex daughter-in-law reached out to me for a bible study, I thought of BSF. She is a new Christian and I believe this will be her first ever study into the word of God! Since I have not done revelation, the Lord impressed upon my heart that I should do this study with her and her 7 year old daughter, my granddaughter, Wesley! My hope is that she will be put into a group with young working women whom she can relate to and bond with. I realize the groups are individually prayed for so this is my prayer and “Let the Bible fill her memory, rule in her heart and guide her feet” Henrietta C Mears

My schedule changed weekly so I never worked the same nights and couldn’t commit so BSF knowing that I wouldn’t have the time required to stay current with the class or so I thought. IF I had only known that I could have made it work, I would have joined years ago. Last year was without doubt the BEST THING I have EVER done as far as Bible study goes. The lectures done by Heather are Spirit led, the notes are invaluable, the group discussions are eye opening, the friendships made are priceless the time spent parked on a select few verses weekly in deep study yielded a deeper understanding of those verses and that’s just a few of the benefits

  58. Thanks for the encouraging words Bennett. On June 11, a man named John wrote that he did not see the information about the symbols and your responded, noting that it had been left out and added later, to scroll down further and it would be there now. When I scroll down further, it gets into the comments and there is nothing at the end of the comments either. It is not in the original email – do we have to find it written again somewhere to have that added?

    • Hi John,

      Glad to hear you are looking forward to the study! Most North American classes follow a schedule similar to schools, starting in September and ending in May. You should begin hearing from your group leader closer to the beginning of the study, some time in August.

    Yes the Christians have to meditate the book of Revelation;
    And we know too that telling about hope helps us to evangelize; Nowdays there is no hope, we make difference with the unbelievers when we show our hope in Jesus Christ.

Now I will see it as learn and growing together instead of battleground of opposing viewpoints; JESUS and His glory than about future events; God rights all wrong and repairs all brokenness and when Jesus takes my home!

I was double blessed. 2016 was the 1st year for a study group in Polson. I would attend the Tuesday evening meeting here, then the next morning, I drove 70 plus miles to Missoula where I was able to study and grow with another study group and speaker there. I am looking forward to this 4th visit with God and His John, again. It is not an easy book, but it is an even deeper picture of our Lord and God.. Be bless my sisters, brothers, and youth….Amen

I will be forever humbled and grateful that God still chooses to work through BSF to bring glory to himself alone!

I have, as most, not seen the text of the study, Revelation: The Hope, but I have hope that the study will connect Old Testament passages and prophecies to the words as sent from God to the apostle John. It would be meaningful to see how the past leads into a general disposition of the winning final times. Not really trying to predict the hour or date, but how the past leads to what John envisioned for his contemporaries and all the way to us.

He gave me wisdom to recognize good and evil and wisdom to fear that living fire, that living Word inside me. It is heaven in heart and daily I am so grateful that He opened my eyes and let me see Him with my inner eye face to face. I hold on that Peace that leads me on a safe path with HIM. • Hi Joy,

      BSF holds to a clear and specific Statement of Faith that outlines its doctrinal beliefs. BSF believes that the 66 books of Holy Scripture, as originally given, are in their entirety the Word of God verbally inspired and wholly without error in all that they declare and, therefore, are the supreme and final authority of faith and life. BSF does not promote or align itself exclusively with a specific Christian denomination. The BSF Statement of Faith is available on the BSF website.

      In light of recent events in Israel and Palestine, our hearts are heavy with the loss, tragedy, and unspeakable violence experienced by so many, and we acknowledge the situation in the Middle East is complex, with no simple solutions.

      Bible Study Fellowship affirms that all people are created in the image of God and, as such, hold immeasurable value, dignity, and worth.

      We realize there are Christians on both sides of this conflict, yet we also believe that throughout history, God has made specific promises to Israel that He intends to keep. We desire to mirror God’s heart toward the Jews and the Arabs in the epicenter.

      The violence and atrocities of this conflict and others around the world are shocking, yet the Bible says that these events will escalate as the end of the age draws near. Rather than fear, readiness for the Lord’s return calls for both faith and faithfulness and should motivate us to pray for the salvation of both Jews and Gentiles.

      We pray for righteousness, peace, and justice in Israel, the Middle East, and the rest of the world.

      Blessings, Meredith

  143. I am currently the ACS in my class and was formerly a CL. After having completed all of the available BSF studies available at the time (back in the early ‘90’s) I stepped out to make room for all the ladies on the Waitlist.
    I returned to class a few years ago when a friend, a GL at the time, told me, “You have to come next year, we will finally have “Revelation”!” I was blown away. This study sealed my faith – with all that is happening in the world today, knowing in my soul that God is in control, gives me a peace beyond all understanding. I have no fear of what is to come, because I know exactly where I will end up.
    Without even thinking about it, I find myself telling every woman I meet that I am in BSF and , “you must come to the class next year, it’s Revelation and it will blow you away – it will give you such peace in this world.” Many of them have signed up already. The Lord is certainly using me!

  144. Great! But when I click on Read More, I am taken to the “3 Reasons”, but nothing about the graphics and images in the book??? What am I missing?

    • John – great catch! That piece was invisible for some reason, it is now fixed!

  145. I came to know the Lord through BSF in 1976 attending in Walnut Creek CA (only 5 studies then). As our teaching leader spoke on that first day, tears streamed down my face. No one had ever told me that I could have a personal relationship with Jesus. She did and the studies always confirmed. Bennett said, “Revelation is far more about Jesus’ glory than future events, symbols or timelines.” I have heard and now seen that there have been a lot of changes in BSF. It sounds as though you have kept “the main thing the main thing”–Jesus. I have ordered my book and eagerly waiting for its arrival.

  152. BSF is the best Bible class I ever attended. When the Spirit leads
    me, I share and encourage others to join!
    I prayer for the leaders, the theology and staff who work hard to put these lessons of the Bible for us to learn.

  154. I have a question about the following sentence in this article…

    “Christians should interpret the Bible according to the literal sense of the author’s intended meaning”.

    Because the Bible was written over 2,000 years ago, how can we know what the “author’s intended meaning” was? And especially when some of John’s visions were “too glorious for common language”.

    • Susan, these are excellent questions! Are you enrolled in BSF for the Fall? These are topics that will be covered in the BSF notes. If you still have questions, your group leader and class staff are there to help!

  159. I was raised in a Spanish speaking Roman Catholic household and still remember my mom wondering about the meaning of entities & events in the book of Revelation. The Lord used this memory as part of a series of events which lead me to surrender to Jesus as my personal Savior. Keep on teaching, expounding and explaining the majestic Word of GOD! It will continue to bear much fruit for Christ & His Kingdom.

  163. Thank you for this message. It was exactly what I needed to hear, because I definitely had doubts about pursuing Revelations in our Bible Study group since it is so very controversial. But your message gave me hope and I will definitely be involved. Thank you again

  164. Thank you, Jesus, that I have hope in you! I was at first scared to study Revelation, and yet I know that throughout the past several years, God has kept me in BSF. I have been in one of the most challenging times of my life, but He has walked alongside me every day and is truly faithful. Thank you BSF and all of the leaders. I joined a Global group last year with my leader in India, and a group from countries all over. It has been one of the best experiences I could ever have asked for. I consider every woman in it my sister, and what a prayer warrior group!

      I’ve done 9 years of BSF in person and this would be my first time to do it online. Thanks so much!

  167. The first BSF study that my husband and I completed was Revelation. Over several years of learning through BSF, my heart has changed so dramatically; so has my love for God and for people. Two years ago, I wrote and recorded a song about the attributes of God which was inspired by my studies in BSF. I have shared it with many people, including BSF posts, however, I don’t really know how it was received. I just know that now is the time to take whatever opportunities God puts on our hearts to point people to Jesus and His Word.

  168. I want to be like John as he heard a voice, turned to see who was speaking, saw the glorified Christ.
    John was given a mission to write what Christ offered him.
    I so desire to see Christ in each chapter of Revelation,
    Apply what He gives me through my woman and our group discussions .
    Looking to Him for hope in the world He has placed me.
    To God be glorified.

  170. I loved this email, and note from Bennet, and find it fasinating how she states that the word is equally true….it can be also equally unclear….wow!
    I like a good discussion in delving into Gods word. The BSF classes I have taken now four years have made a world of difference in my wanting to know Jesus more, and wanting to share the truth of the gospel.

    • I love this quote, “” all Scripture is equally true, but not always equally clear”. That is we humbly ask the Holy Spirit for clarity or wait for heaven’s understanding.

  172. I am 68 years old. Last year (studying John) was my first year to come to BSF. I had lived in a smaller town up until five years ago and I was THIRSTY for the WORD. I’m still in awe at the way God worked in that Bible study. I feel like the scales were falling off my eyes with every assignment, group discussion and lecture. ‘Thank you to everyone who has anything to do with ensuring that BSF continues. I am so excited to study Revelation.

    When will the new book of lessons be available for our based?

    God be with you and bless the work you’re doing. Cy Young
