How God Gave Me Courage in Tragedy

Trusting God’s Presence & Purposes in Trials

Driving toward her home in Altadena, California, Jihyun Oh struggled to see through the early-morning darkness. Less than 12 hours before, Jihyun had evacuated the area as news of wildfires reached her California neighborhood.

“For some reason I didn’t have the emergency alert on my phone. It was about 7 p.m. when a neighbor knocked on my door and said, ‘We’re evacuating!’ When I looked outside, I could see an orange glow over the mountain. I didn’t even think twice about it. I grabbed a few things and left, thinking I would be back in the morning.”

The next morning, Jihyun drove slowly through the familiar Altadena streets, believing the danger had passed. As she neared her home, the darkness broke as flames erupted in the distance. What Jihyun assumed was the dawning of the new day was actually a thick cloud of smoke hiding the growing devastation.

“When I looked to one side, the sun was coming out, and the other side was just dark. When I drove into it, there were embers flying everywhere and houses on fire. I couldn’t even get close to my street. I turned around immediately.”

{

When I looked outside, I could see flames over the mountain coming this direction.

{

Since that first evacuation in early January, Jihyun has relocated five times and is still waiting to return home. Miraculously, her house, along with a neighbor’s, is still standing; 10 other homes on her street burned to the ground. On either side and across the street, only rubble remains.

“There’s still a daunting task ahead of us, even when we are able to gain access. We just don’t know what the next steps will be.”

In circumstances that feel overwhelming, Jihyun finds hope in God’s Word.

“I realized how important it is to study Scripture daily. God tells us that there will be trouble in this world, so if we store the passages in our heart in the normal times, we experience God’s comfort through His Word when we need it the most.”

Jihyun’s faith reminds us of God’s promise from Revelation 1:3: “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.”

Just as early Christians found courage through Revelation generations ago, Jihyun clings to God’s promises today.

Hear It – Take It To Heart

In 1997, newly arrived in the United States from Korea, Jihyun’s life was changed when she encountered God. During her first few months in a new country, Jihyun lived with a Christian family who helped her acclimate to a new culture – and invited her to church.

Every Sunday, Jihyun attended church with her host family. When she heard the hymn “Amazing Grace” for the first time, her life changed for eternity.

“Even with my poor English I knew that I had to agree. I heard ‘I once was lost’ and felt like yes, that’s me! I heard ‘I once was blind’ and thought, ‘yes, I agree!’ I was lost and I was blind. I realized what God was offering me. It was what I had been missing all those years.”

{

I realized what God was offering me. It was what I had been missing all those years.

{

In 2010, Jihyun joined Bible Study Fellowship and her faith grew.

“BSF helped me to hide God’s Word in my heart. In BSF, studying God’s Word becomes a habit. You know it is good for you, even if you don’t feel the daily impact. But in your most desperate time, you realize how important it truly is. When I am having a hard time, I have to keep repeating Scripture over and over again. When I pray, God draws to mind verses that I need for comfort and peace.”

For Jihyun, BSF’s daily study rhythm offered the spiritual foundation she needed. By hearing God’s Word and taking it to heart, Jihyun experienced peace in suffering: a blessing only God can provide.

Read The Words Aloud – Share The Hope

The day Jihyun accepted Christ in 1997, she began to pray for her family. Recently, Jihyun’s younger sister became a Christian after Jihyn shared the gospel with her. But Jihyun’s mother, a practicing Buddhist, was simply not interested.

“Every time I talked to her about God, she couldn’t open her heart. But gradually, she decided to stop going to Buddha’s temple. At times I wanted to give up, to stop praying, but my fellow BSF leaders helped me to keep praying for her.”

When Jihyun shared with her mother about the fires consuming her LA neighborhood, she also shared about God’s mercy.

“I just asked her to pray. I told her, ‘I am okay, and that has to be God’s mercy.’ My mom was so emotional, I could tell she was thinking about something. She asked if we could go to church together the next time I visit Korea. I broke into tears, praising God in my heart. I couldn’t believe what she had just said! I am praying she will receive Christ soon, even before I get there!”

{

If this is what God uses to bring my mom to faith in God, it will be worth losing everything I have for her to gain eternal salvation.

{

For years, Jihyun has shared her faith with her family. This year, she shared about what God was teaching her through Revelation: The Hope. And through the tragedy of the wildfires, she shared about God’s mercy in the midst of suffering. Through it all, Jihyun prayed.

“If this is what God uses to bring my mom to faith in God, it will be worth losing everything I have for her to gain eternal salvation.”

Jihyun’s story reminds us that God speaks through His Word—He simply asks us to hear it and take it to heart. When we share His truth, He faithfully works beyond what we can see.

“When I look back, I see all the ways God has been leading me. He actually brought me all the way across the world to save me. Even if I have nothing, salvation is the most invaluable thing—and the only thing I can never lose.”

  1. Thank you for sharing this. Our son and his wife were evacuated from the same fire and are planning to rebuild. The process is tedious and lengthy – and very frustrating. But we are trusting the Lord to continue to show his grace to this family. We will also pray for you. We know several other believers who lost their homes in Alta Dena. We are trusting that these are days others meant for evil but the Lord God, our gracious, redeeming Savior brings beauty out of ashes and hope from weariness. May He sustain your hope and faith. We have been surprised how The Lord is redeeming the devastation of this area. May He continue to let you see the works of His hand around you.

  8. Praise the Lord! He truly saves! On 2/11, my mom prayed the sinner’s prayer with me and received God’s salvation! It was surreal actually because I least expected but just asked her the same question and if she would pray with me… “Only if you agree, mom, follow after me…” She agreed and said it for the 1st time and now she is a child of God! Hallelujah! Thank you so much for your prayers, everyone! Our God is truly merciful and gracious! Let’s keep on praying for the yet-to-be-children of God; family, friend and others that God put on our path!

    Luke 15:11 The father of the Prodigal son did not consider disrespect for his younger son asking for his inheritance during his lifetime but he faithfully gave him his share, however, when at bottom of his suffering – the prodigal son remembered his father’s house. May we too remember our father’s house all the time and not only when we are troubled but even in good times and always. For surely the times are drawing near.

    Credible reflection Jihyun, our God is faithful and patient.

    God Bless you as your Mother prepares to receive Christ. My prayer today.

  73. Dear Sister in Christ, Jihyun,

    Thank you, so much for sharing, such answer of prayer of HOPE. Your sharing reminds me of Isaiah 61:1-11, rich indeed for such a time as this for many hurting here in California. To heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, to comfort those who mourn. v3- “To console those who mourn in Zion, To give them Beauty for ashes, The oil of joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, That they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, tha He may be glorified.”
    May your family be strengthened with praise,hope, and assurance of the presence of a Sheperd who watches and cares for each of you. In Jesus Mighty Name I pray.

    I am having trouble scrolling down to end, with Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Amen!

    Thank you for this very strong and emotional testimony. God can and will work in any circumstance, may His name be praised forever and may your Mum enjoy the gift of salvation. (am claiming it in Jesus name). In my prayers. Amen to the lamb of God, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen and ame

  84. I completely agree with Jihyun about the experience of the Holy Spirit bringing to my remembrance the scriptures I had read before but failed to memorize. My prayer has been: Lord, bring these messages I am reading to my remembrance when I need them most. He has come through for me on many occasions. May be not word for word but certainly the messages in essence. These experiences have continued to solidify my faith in the promises of God. Hallelujah.

  86. The book of Revelation has truly strengthened my faith in Jesus Christ the Lamb, who was the only one found worthy to open the scroll. The seven churches mentioned with each having a specific message addressing their sins also made me evaluate myself against each and I found myself lacking in all areas. I’m praying for forgiveness from the Lord.
    The trumpets are equally a scare and the message of the impeding judgement. There’s a sense of urgency and for sure I’m now speaking about the judgement of the Lord whenever I get the opportunity to share the word. What encourages me is knowing that I have the seal of Christ on me and that in Christ I am secured forever! Hallelujah! Praise the LORD!

  90. So thankful that your mother is convicted to want to go to church to know God more. May the Holy Spirit continue to lead her to God Himself. My Aunt and Uncle lost her home in this wildfire. I wrote to sympathize with her, but told her that God was merciful that they are alive and sound. I reminded her when one receives Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior, Jesus would have a place in heaven prepared for him/her, …repeating the Gospel to them. My Aunt claimed to believe, but do not go to church to worship. My Aunt replied “thank You”. Praying for them.

  94. We all know that life in this world is very temporal. Eternity with Christ is permanent. God teaches us through the loss of a loved one or loss of our precious things (that we consider)that we need God more than anything else. I am a widow and I know what I am talking about. Memorizing verses and hiding it in our heart is a good practice. God bless her and her family. I am sure that God will answer her prayer even though we think it is not happening soon, in his time he will do it.

    God is so amazing! Your story of the fire and of your sister coming to Jesus and your Mom, hopefully soon. It touched my heart! We never know what circumstances God will place in our lives. But what you said is beautiful! We are to be in God’s word; memorizing his word so we have God’s word in our heart no matter what circumstances come our way. Blessings to you and your family!

  109. “The Beatitudes of Revelation”
    Beatitudes are the divine blessings of God upon His elect:

    “Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy …” {Revelation 1:3a}
    “… blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near.” {Revelation 1:3b}
    “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on” … “they will rest from their labor” {Revelation 14:13}
    “Blessed is the one who stays awake and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.” {Revelation 16:15}
    “’Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ And he added, ‘These are the true words of God.’” {Revelation 19:9}
    “Blessed and holy are those who share in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.” {Revelation 20:6}
    “Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy written in this scroll.”{Revelation 22:7}
    “Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city.” {Revelation 22:14}

  110. Praise the Lord! Salvation of our loved ones is worth all the wealth on earth (which will soon be worthless, when the earth will be destroyed and replace with a new earth.) Besides claiming to the two “Blessed” in Rev 1:3, there are 6 more “blessed” in Revelation 14:13, 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7; and 22:14. These 8 “Blessed” will make “The Beatitudes of Revelation.” Beatitudes are the divine blessings of God upon His elect. Thank you Lord!
