How I Learned to Live for Christ in the Workplace
EMBRACING YOUR ROLE AS A WITNESS FOR THE GOSPEL
BSF Staff
From the Editorial Team
For 30 years, Tad Brockway navigated the intricacies of a quickly growing tech industry. From an entry level software engineer to a corporate vice president for Microsoft, Tad experienced the challenges of living as a Christian in a secular workplace.
“Over time, I felt that I needed to be more open about my faith, and that doesn’t always feel comfortable in a secular industry. Especially in a leadership role, you feel that you aren’t supposed to do that. Whether that’s an imagined thing or an actual thing, you feel that it’s a private part of people’s lives. But I believe there is an appetite for Christians to be more forthcoming in the workplace. I began to feel increasingly that I had a responsibility and a call to be more authentic – and obedient.”
I believe there is an appetite for Christians to be more forthcoming in the workplace.
Like Tad, many of us long to share the gospel with our co-workers. As we study God’s Word we feel a sense of urgency, reading Christ’s words in Revelation 22:12a: “Look, I am coming soon!”
But too often, we struggle to know how to begin.
Reflecting on his own experience, Tad shares three practical ways to live for Christ in the workplace.
Commit to pray through your workday
In 2012, Tad joined his first Bible Study Fellowship class. Within weeks, he felt compelled to change the way he approached his job and working relationships.
“There’s a sanctification process that happens for every believer over time. We outwardly become more Christ-like in our behavior. Everyone has their own journey there. I really became more earnest in my faith and aware of my walk and my witness when I started doing Bible study. It made me more prayerful about how I showed up at work.”
Tad began to intentionally pray for his co-workers, asking God for the wisdom and opportunity to represent his Christian identity by loving and serving others. As he traveled more frequently for business meetings and to speak at conferences, Tad integrated intentional prayer into his daily routine.
“Before I would leave my hotel room, I would get on my hands and knees and pray that God would shine through my interactions with others. I did that before every significant meeting and presentation. It became a habit for me.”
Through prayer, Tad developed a deeper compassion for his co-workers. By intentionally making time for prayer during the workday, Tad redirected his focus from the distractions of the world to fix his eyes on Jesus again and again.
Establish your identity as a Christian
As Tad began to pray more intentionally, his burden to share his faith grew. He wanted to talk openly about his faith but struggled to know where to begin. Because he was looking for natural ways to introduce his faith into everyday conversations, Tad’s coworkers gradually became more aware of Tad’s identity in Christ.
“Working at a company where we were encouraged to share and be authentic at work, I would look for opportunities to speak about my faith as a Christian. It was often something small, like sharing about church when asked about my weekend, which sometimes led to a conversation about my faith. But at the very least people became aware of who I am and what’s important to me.”
Tad’s heart for the Lord was authentic and he simply wanted to live out his faith with others.
“As I continued to get to know my coworkers better, they would share with me that they saw my behavior as different from other people, including the way I led in the workplace. I was trying to model my leadership and life after Jesus. We can intentionally establish our Christian identity simply by being honest and respectful with people. Isn’t that amazing?”
Lead like Christ, not the culture
“In a secular world and a secular career, we are just swirling in selfish ambition and the priorities of the world. This inspired me to try to focus on being Christlike and loving others. As a leader, I looked for opportunities to help others shine and elevate them. By focusing on the success of my team, I realized I could make an even bigger impact. The world often encourages self-seeking behavior, but the message of Christ is to humbly serve others.”
The world often encourages self-seeking behavior, but the message of Christ is to humbly serve others.
When Tad retired from Microsoft and the technology industry in December 2023, he wanted to share more about his tech journey, the gospel, and his personal faith. Tad recorded a video and posted it publicly.
“I believe this because God has transformed my life,” Tad shared in the video. “If you are interested in catching up and discussing or even challenging some of the things I’ve talked about in this video, I would love to talk to you. If you’re feeling that you just want someone to chat with you and maybe even pray with you, I would love for you to reach out to me.”
God has uniquely positioned each of us, like Tad, in our workplaces, our families, and our communities to share the hope of Christ. In the moments when we struggle to know where to begin, we can pray intentionally, look for opportunities to establish our identity as Christians, and live differently from those around us.
Though we may not always see how God is working, we can trust Jesus’s promise in Revelation 22:20a, “Yes, I am coming soon.” And with that in mind, we pray that our co-workers will respond “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus” (Revelation 22:20b).

Thank you for sharing your story. Enjoyed what you had to say. God bless you as your continue to work for him..
I love this. I struggle with how to be a Christian in my place of work. I really appreciate these very useful and practical tips.
Tad. God bless you for this. I am a partner in a Consultantany firm and really struggled to witness and quite often overwhelmed with fear.
Of late, however, I sort of had a breakthrough and now lead in a weekly Bible Study Fellowship with the lower cadre staff but unfortunately without my fellow partners. How do I go about it
To God be the glory for His work in & through your life. So very thankful He has led you to be a part of His mission through BSF!
Thank you for a beautiful testimony. May the Lord bless you more and your family. God bless.
Thank you, Tad
Your story is so inspirational and easy to relate to. Many have had a similar experience especially as we get older. I’ve been going to BSF for about ten years. God bless.
Louise
WOW! What a wonderful testimony Tad! It is evident that God is at work in your life and I cannot wait to see how this next chapter unfolds for you as you trust God to direct your steps. Blessings to you and your family!
I’m currently employed at a large tech company. When I started in the late 90’s I joined their Christian employee group. Many times I would hear believers express a thought pattern that ministry stopped at our front door . That thought pattern just didn’t resonate with me because when I looked at my co-workers around me I saw a field ready for harvest. I’m grateful that God laid that on my heart because it opened up so many opportunities in my workplace and my faith grew through those experiences. Over the last few years God has opened a door that has allowed multiple tech companies Christian employee groups to come together throughout the year to support each other in our faith as we witness with grace and love in our workplaces. Thank you for sharing your experience and encouraging us in our walk.
Tad, thank you so very much about being so open about how God changed your heart & helped you change your behavior. My husband is also in the Tech industry & I know from his conversations how challenging it is being in corporate America & obediently sharing Christ with others, as well as behaving like Christ. I shared your 3 practical changes with him. Thank you so very much for giving me something with which to encourage him.
Thanks for sharing an encouraging story.
Thank you Tad for your beautiful testimony!
I’ve been a believer since my teens but had strayed when I married my agnostic husband. I figured I could change him. Not a chance especially with the way I led my life. Once I got myself back to the Lord thru BSF in 2003 I tried too hard to “help” God bring hubby to Jesus. That also backfired of course. I’ve now been trying to shut up and let God do the work, praying that God will put a strong believing man in his life (that I’ve never met) that will lead him to Jesus. My faith is strong but the enemy still keeps me from living out loud for Jesus especially in front of hubby, in fear I’ll drive him to divorce. We’ll be married 40 years this July, and God has told me this is the year hubby will meet Him!
This article and video are the nudge I need to live out loud for the Lord, but not in a preachy way. I will pray for my husband, our “spiritual” daughter, our prodigal son (we haven’t spoken in over 3 years) and many others in my life who aren’t saved (or who think they are but aren’t). Moreover I will pray that I will listen for (and to) God’s still small voice as I continue this journey.
Please pray with me!
Dear Sue, this story reminded me of what you are praying about right now! I hope it offers hope – love this example of how to pray for non-believing family members

Thank you Tad! Your video especially and your habit of intentional prayer for your coworkers inspire and energize me.
Tad, your message truly touched my heart, and I took some notes. I’ve been a part of BSF for over 6 years and this was the best witnessing article and video I have seen. May God continue to cover and increase your territories.
Tad, your video was so inspiring. Thank you for sharing.
Tad, thank you for showing us how you share the gospel! I love how you use tech words like “incompatibility” and “solution.” What a great reminder to speak to our peers in terms they can understand. (I’m an engineer and will borrow some of your phrasing 😀 )
My pre-believing husband is an engineer, so I can relate!
This article from Tad was right on time for me. I’d been praying about this very thing. I know this is because we serve an on-time God. Thank you Tad for sharing your story. I will look you up on Linkedin.
What an incredibly uplifting story. You can sense the Holy Spirit’s presence pouring out of Tad.
Thanks so much for sharing.
I am a retired teacher, band director to be exact. As teachers, we are prohibited in sharing our faith with our students or so I thought for a very long time. I was blessed to be teaching in an area where there were a great number of Christian band directors and the most supportive group you will ever meet. When I was new in the district, I didn’t know them very well but at a professional development event, one of the best teachers/directors in the state said “everything I teach every day is from the Bible.” As I set out to know these teachers better I found most every one of them to be deeply religious – there is even a group that meets for prayer and support and sends out regular mailings with devotional material and all of them talk about how they pray for their kids every day. Meeting with them is how I realized that you didn’t have to worry so much about what you say but rather how you live and treat the kids that shows your faith. I prayed openly with my kids before competitions and when bad things were happening that affected us and I always said before I prayed that they were well aware of my beliefs and that God was my higher power, that they knew I loved them and respected them and to please join me in whatever fashion they were comfortable. My kids were always totally respectful and I never had a complaint from a kid, a parent or administration. They knew where my heart was and that they each had a place in it. I was known for my “kindness talks” with my middle school kids and by the time they reached high school those were not necessary as those kids treated me and each other as we all should. You can certainly show your faith in the way you live and in the relationships you build with people without quoting Scripture.
Hi Yvonne! I work in speech-language therapy in a large suburban public school district. There are many teachers, staff and students who are believers. I am called to this career/ministry. The non-believers notice that something is different about me, the believers recognize Christ in me. Preach in everything you do, sometimes use words.
That video by Tad is a beautifully creative way to share one’s faith. I like the way he affirmed his colleagues yet introducing to them the life giving gift of Jesus. I have picked a leaf!
Thank you for sharing your story. I needed to be reminded that “Though we may not see how God is working, we can trust Jesus’ promise in Rev. 22:20a.”
Tad, I appreciate what you said about prayer redirecting your focus from the distractions of this world to fix your eyes on Jesus repeatedly. I needed to hear that for myself.
Thank you Tad this was so uplifting and inspiring.
Thank you for making this video. Your journey in technology has been great but I’m glad you found BSF to continue in a new way. God’s plan, no doubt. I hope it touches people, opens doors, and plants seeds in people for a long time. The most important thing is our assurance of an eternal home beyond this life.
InspirIng, Tad! I’m a first-timer at BSF this year. My position at work is not as prestigious as yours was at Microsoft and is at BSF- just one of the lowly minions hehe, but I am inspired and encouraged by your story. God has recently put in on my heart to make my workplace my mission field. It’s amazing how many doors He opens if only you muster up the courage to try. Thank you for your message!
Thank you so much for the encouragement. I am not a regular atendee of bsf this year. I have witnessed christ in my workplace and will continue to do so till I retire. God bless you.
Very Great presentation May God Continue TO Bless You
I love putting a face with a name! Thanks, Tad, for all that you do to help database managers worldwide.
Thanks, Tad
I’m still in the tech industry … these are great ideas to share real life with my co-workers.
Thank you for sharing, very inspirational to me❤️
Thank you Tad. Such a great message and testimony.
Thank you Tad for sharing your journey and how God led you through your work experience in sharing the gospel by being authentic.
Wow! I read and watch this video with tears pouring down my face! I can relate so much coming from an entrepreneurial background and running several businesses to heeding His call to the TL role –
I relate to this powerful message from Tad and thank God for it – psyched He’s serving at BSF where I have experienced so much of God, it is where He makes Himself known to me, and I get to share it with His wonderful class of women I love so much – and the whole world!!!
Do you have any studies on how to witness to a family member who is an atheist and doesn’t believe the Bible?
Hi Catherine, I loved this story about one of our members. I hope it can encourage you too!
https://bsfblog2025.onecreative.net/sharing-the-gospel-with-family/
I love the clear & simple, non-threatening way that Tad shared the good news in this video.
This was so timely. My prayer request has been that I can be a light in my work place. This is such an encouragement to continue. Thanks
Thank you, Tad for sharing this beautiful Merry Christmas Message. I am glad that God led you to Bible Study Fellowship. Like you, I was led to BSF after 35 years of teaching and 10 years managing a home for Senior Citizens. May God continue to bless you as we all intentionally attempt to fulfill the Vision of BSF: to Magnify God and Mature His People.
I love the fact that Tad talks about our inability to avoid evil and that we are imperfect. God is perfection. Thus, we have an incompatibility problem. God has given us the solution to this incompatibility problem and if we accept His free gift of salvation, He will restore our relationship with Him.
Tad, thank you for sharing your faith the world!
Karen – great catch! We have fixed that typo. Appreciate you!!
Yes, it’s crucial to integrate faith into everyday life and work. This fosters a community rooted in love, service, and authentic relationships.
I really enjoyed the video from Tad.
I hope his light continues to shine bright for Jesus.
As a leader in a public school in a very secular area of the country, I do my best to be bold and take every opportunity to share Christ with students and staff. God opens many doors when I am receptive to His Spirit.
Tad, I’m inspired by your post and your boldness for Christ. It makes me want to take even more ground for the Lord in my workplace. Thank you, brother!
This was an excellent video. I was looking for a way to begin to share my faith more and those three things Ted mentioned is a great way to start. Praying for others, mentioning my faith in conversion, and being honest with people. I loved the way he told the story of the Bible and offered to talk to others if they didn’t agree. Keep up the excellent work Ted.
Despite my aversion the Microsoft (jk — ha ha!), I agree with Tad 1000%. As an IT manager, I’ve often been asked why my leadership style is so different than others. I simply point to the Bible in my tech manual bookcase, and the stack of BSF business cards on my desk.
Beautiful and inspiring! I’ll give extra encouragement to my group members to watch this. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing this. It’s true that being authentic and open about faith helps others consider more about Jesus. Very encouraging!
I will be 84 this coming January. This is my second year studying with BSF. I have found it to be the most indepth study I have ever done. The Notes, lectures and group studies have been so enriching. My prayer has been to stay teachable and here is where I have received some of the best teaching. This is solid biblical teaching that is truly transformational. Thank you for this opportunity.
Pressing on for the prize!
Mary
This is amazing, Mary! Welcome to the BSF family. It is for everyone. I love that the whole world is invited to study and fellowship together.
this is a common and disconnected topic for more seminars, devotionals, and sermons who understandably see it as a challenge…
Asynchronously, the general content of such discussion centers around providently trying to fit square pegs into round holes.
Identifying the origin and practice of adjusting our serve to the setting isn’t as productive as identifying what we are within our environment and moving toward coherence with what we find authentic in both our creation and an infused relationship of confidence of our belonging within it.
That changes the perspective from manipulation of our insecure attempts at righteousness to one more able to trust His will…
So good to hear this!
Great article. Thank you.
Thank you for being a part BSF such a wonderful program. It was been a blessing to me for 5 years.
