Why BSF Is More Than A Bible Study

Hollie Roberts

BSF Executive Director
In the very first chapter of Revelation, we find this promise:

“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it [Revelation], because the time is near.” (1:3)

It sounds so simple.

Step 1: Read the words aloud.

Step 2: Hear the words.

Step 3: Take the words to heart.

But this verse doesn’t say to simply “listen” to the words. It says we are to “hear” the words. And how are we supposed to take these confusing prophetic chapters to heart?

How do we internalize the book of Revelation so completely that we live each day transformed by its verses? How do we make sure Revelation changes the way we approach our work, our families, and our relationships? Suddenly, as busy people and non-theologians, Revelation 1:3 does not seem so simple.

Struggling to understand Revelation’s meaning and significance, many Christians simply choose a book that feels more accessible.

But let me tell you something wonderful. BSF was built for moments like this.

65 Years of Taking God’s Word to Heart

In preparation for BSF’s 65th anniversary celebration, I spent time reading about our founder, Audrey Wetherell Johnson. After serving as a missionary in China, she struggled with what to do next. So she prayed.

“I asked God what He wanted me to do. He seemed to thrust the question right back at me: ‘What would you above all things like to do?’ I replied, ‘I love Your Word above all things. I would love to spend my life teaching others to find what I have found.’”

{

I love Your Word above all things. I would love to spend my life teaching others to find what I have found.

{

When I heard that story, I realized BSF was designed to be so much more than a typical Bible study. As Miss Johnson met with five women, she developed the BSF study model—personal lesson questions, group discussion, a teaching lecture, and the lesson notes. And week after week, Miss Johnson never forgot what God called her to do: teach others to find a personal love for God and His Word.

Through lesson questions and community discussion, Miss Johnson trained others to “hear” God’s Word for themselves. Through the lecture and the notes, she taught every BSFer how to personally take God’s Word to heart.

In that first BSF group, God transformed five women in California.

Sixty-five years later, God continues to transform thousands worldwide.

Same God. Same Goal.

This year’s Revelation study follows the same time-tested model. We will answer daily questions, discuss in community, learn from the lecture, and study our notes. And as we work through BSF week after week, we will discover so much more than the origin of verses and the significance of symbols. We will learn to hear God’s Word for ourselves and take His truth to heart.

How do I know? Because I have heard countless stories about how God has used BSF to transform our members.

I was a new Christian in 1994, and my first Bible study ever was BSF’s The Life of Moses. I wouldn’t even leave the parking lot after class without reading all the notes. I was so hungry for His Word, I was like a sponge. God grew me up in the Lord through Bible Study Fellowship. I am not the same woman I was 30 years ago. Thank you, Jesus.

-Judy (Roslyn, Washington)

Every role in BSF has taught me the richness of knowing God and proclaiming His love and joy unspeakable. God fulfilled my desire to be a missionary by learning God’s Word through BSF. I’m ever grateful to God for His Word, which enables me to magnify God and mature His people.

-Nissi (Bangalore, India)

Almost 10 years ago, God gave me courage to walk into a BSF class by myself—a big deal for those who know me. And I joined the study of Revelation. God and BSF have taught me how to read and study the Bible. God has continued to reveal Himself to me and open my eyes to all the ways He is working in my life. To God be the glory!

-Shay (Dallas, Texas)

I joined BSF when we were studying about Romans and wow, did the Lord speak to me in every study. I bless the Lord for every season. Since I have joined BSF, I have been refreshed and renewed my thinking. Recently when we studied, I found myself in a season of brokenness after losing my dear mother. But each week as I came, even in the pain, the Lord gave me hope and faith to hold on to. I bless the Lord for the BSF family.

-Shiku (Nairobi, Kenya)

I love these stories so deeply because they remind me of my own. Through BSF, I also discovered the joy of hearing God speak through His Word. I personally learned to take God’s Word to heart, finding deep satisfaction as He transformed every area of my life. I found what Miss Johnson found, and I hope you will too.

My prayer for you this year is that the book of Revelation will become so alive in your mind and heart that God transforms you verse by verse. And as your life changes, I pray that God’s truth will directly impact every area of your life.

{

I pray that God's truth will directly impact every area of your life.

{
Together, we will approach Revelation with confidence, holding fast the promise of Revelation 1:3:

Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it [Revelation], because the time is near.”

  8. Hollie, a few weeks ago I heard you express the goal of making BSF “the most accessible in-depth bible study on the planet.” I didn’t realize the extent of that goal until I got my father-in-law to join an online group. With severe hearing loss and a cochlear implant, he struggles to participate in a bible study group. However, on his tablet, connected to his tablet, he does just fine. He also has essential tremors, which make it difficult for him to write. He’s discovered the app, where he can speak his answers that become text on pages he can print out for OGMs. Your goal and progress towards that goal is an answer to our prayer that he could once again (at age 85) interact with God’s Word and other men. Thank you!

  10. I look forward to this study of Revelation. God has been gracious over the past 47 years I have been saved to teach me and lead me into all truth. He’s used many means, giving me revelation directly, through pastors, Bible Studies, conferences, retreats, friends and yes, even BSF several years ago. I made lasting friendships and grew spiritually then and continue to. We are never to to old study and explore God’s Word. It is powerful and living. I’m certain God will speak loud and clear through Revelation The Hope.

A friend from my church ask me if I would like to do a BSF study and we attend together when we can. It has been a blessing to be connected with a group of women to study God’s word. So glad I allowed and made the time to do this. I want to thank the many people that make this possible to reach and teach others about God’s word.🙏❤️

I hide your words in my heart only to please you. For many years, BSF has helped me to understand His words through the questions I answered and the notes I read. His words make alive in me to change my thinking to be a person that glorify my Lord. As Mary said in Luke 1:46-47 “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” I continue take God’s word in heart and have appreciated what BSF has done!

  15. I was wanting to know God, but as a christian and a church member, I did not know how to read my bible and understand it. Until a friend asked me to go to BSF and that decision changed my life and my family’s life. I went, it was a 5 year study then, I fell in love with Jesus and his word. I taught what I was learning in an adult SS class and then in the providence of God I was called into leadership just when I really needed to get a job for income. But God…..I went and in December of that year I was asked to become the Teaching Leader of a day class of women. For 10 years it was a joy and a duty to serve God. It was the BEST THING GOD could have given me. Today I still teach women how to read their bible and fall in love with Jesus. The joy is better than ever. People often ask me when I will quit, the answer I always say is when I die. Thank you Ms. Johnson, and all those that gave this to me.

  16. I’ve been going to Bible Studies since the Key 73 Bible
Studies came out. A short little study on Luke changed my life. The very first session I was in tears, tears of self-awareness, tears of regret, tears of finally finding a “home” for my lost soul. From that time on, I can’t get enough Bible study! Half of our learning, maybe more, is a time of sharing and working it out together. I have taught Bible studies for the last 24 years, and still there is wonder and learning going on in my mind and heart, I learn so much from other people, even those who are not yet proclaiming Jesus as their savior, God speaks to us through whomever He wants and sometimes its a shock, who it comes from, but however we can be reached, and will pay attention to, he will use I guess. I am so excited to be a part of this ministry for the first time, I can hardly wait until it starts!

  17. I’m new to BSF and I’m hoping to find more of God in the word than where I’ve come from. Growing in a certain church atmosphere, the teachings of the word lost God. I knew that wasn’t right after my own devotionals. It became very confusing and only being out of that atmosphere for a couple of years, I’m needing fellowship and sound doctrine. I love Jesus and His word.

  18. The study of the truth about Jesus as reflected in the Gospel according to the disciple whom Jesus loved left me convicted to seek transforming others through being compassionate as the Lord himself. At the same time I seek His compassion in earnest as I go through transformation myself at quite a challenging time in my life. Inevitably, the promise of Hope, from the next study of Revelations, renews my spirit and I eagerly wait to encounter the experience from this promise.

I will forever bless the Lord and His Grace for bringing me into BSF and have been an avid BSF’er since 2001; I am now 85 years young, yet still growing and learning and loving His Word more than my physical food. The studies offered through BSF have not only proven to be a sure foundation on truth, but through Christ’s discernment I am enabled to know what is true and what is false. The “voices of the world” clearly reveal there is a war on truth today.

  28. I have studied with BSF for many years. I love the premise of studying God’s word directly not from a book about “the Book”. The study brings God’s word to life and addresses life ‘in the present’ not the past, not the future–today. We learn to look for Jesus in our everyday life.

  32. How wonderful to study Revelation this year, especially given the tension that is palpable given the situation in Israel, and the Middle East. The hope that the book of Revelation gives us points us to a God who is Large and In Charge of everything. As believers in Jesus Christ we have a place reserved for us at the table of the marriage supper of the Lamb, and I look forward to that day as we study, and are lead by the risen Lamb of God in the book of Revelation.

I matured as a christian woman through the constant of BSF in my life,( although I did sit out some years) Both of my boys are now discerning Christian men whose participation as toddlers in the Children’s program was part of their spiritual foundation.
BSF has been a constant in my life for 30 years. Since I travel for work, I never considered leadership. The online option was a perfect fit for me and in August I accepted an opportunity to serve God as the leader of my zoom small group. Being a BSF leader was a lifetime dream that I thought would never happen at this point, but God had other plans. I am so excited to serve our Lord and other women in this new season of my walk with Him.

I could hardly wait until Fall came and I could, not only hear the lesson and read the notes, but that I could have the wonderful experience of fellowship with my group. My younger daughter was in the first children’s program. I even got to meet and visit with Ms. Johnson; what an experience!! My daughters, as they became adults and moved away, one to the East coast and the other to the West coast, joined BSF. We compared answers from coast to coast! Thank you for a lifetime of learning and acting on God’s Word. Rosemary Jensen was my second teaching leader and I learned so much from her. Sarah Powell, my teaching leader, lived in the same subdivision as I did and picked me up when I had a joint replacement and couldn’t drive. She always told the group that was the reason for being on time! Thank you, BSF, for everything important in my life.

That comment resonated with me because it is a testimony that God’s word is alive and powerful. We have a compass in the storms of life when we “take to heart what is written in it”.
I thank Almighty God for every faithful servant who makes possible this ministry to us. And I thank Him for what he is doing in each one of us as we sit at his feet, eager to be fed and waiting until he comes in glory!

I honestly don’t think I could have survived without the Truths from God’s Word that held me up and kept me strong, trusting in Gods’ love for me, His Sovereignty and eternal plan. Thank you for your prayers and word of encouragement. I was able to view the 65th BSF celebration in Dallas online; so very motivating and inspiring. I can’t remember who said what but as the leaders shared, these are the words that stayed in my heart and mind:

    1. BSF Leaders are the most prayed for people in the world.
    2. God allowed COVID to happen. (my paraphrase)
    3. The message of Revelation is HOPE.
    4. God’s perfect timing in calling Director’s and stirring their hearts with the ‘changes’ but still staying true to the basic foundation of studying His Word.

I started BSF back in 1998/99 with Israel and the Minor Prophets; when Rosemary Jensen was the director. That was my first serious in depth, focused bible study; and I “fell in love with our LORD”.

After about a 10 year absence, I restarted BSF with the book of JOHN.
Still in love with our LORD; still asking, seeking, knocking; and looking forward with much joy to the beauty God will be revealing in Revelation and within our group.

Thanking God for your steadfast faithfulness and prayers.

On my first day in BSF, I discovered the method and approach to studying and applying the Word made a great difference in my life and later in the lives of the ladies I led. I felt the need and immediately the Lord gave me a vision of taking BSF to the Arabic world. How much my people needed to be introduced to this treasure! I wanted to take BSF to my people, the world’s Arabic speakers. I praise the Lord who helped us to start the first Arabic class in Jordan and, two years later start the Online BSF class with 13 groups; springs of Living waters gushed around the globe as springs in the deserts with the promise in. Isa. 3: 6b. I am beyond grateful to witness believers mature in Christ and His name glorified in all the nations. PTL

  59. I am so looking forward to the book of Revelation. I knew about BSF long before I joined. I was only able to join BSF when online classes started as there was never a physical class near me. Beyond the study of the Word, I have been blown away by my global family in Christ. Studying with other women from China, USA, the UK, Kenya, India, Canada, Hong Kong, Russia… wow, it has really shown me that the Lord is truly a God of Every Nation, Tribe and Tongue, and has cured a lot of misconceptions and prejudices I had about saints in other countries. Thank God for online BSF.

  60. I studied Revelation in 2015 as a member of a wonderful BSF group. The study helped me understand God’s Word so clearly. Since then a school program was started at our meetings. I’ve been a leader since it began 4 years ago. The program has really grown. I’m so eager to enlighten the kids this year with this powerful message. May God be the glory.

I remember, when my daughter was 5yrs. old, and in Sunday school, I was to teach her, and her class, about the “bowels of judgement”, and “White robes”. It was had to do!
Ever since then, I have been on a journey learning about the End Times.

I’m excited to learn the details about the book of Revelation, and teach my kids and others, that the victory belongs to the Lord, and Jesus is returning!

  79. I was called back to BSF in fall of 2021, by the Holy Spirit, shortly after losing my husband to cancer. I was so lost without him. God was merciful to me and placed me in a group with a leader who immediately sensed my brokenness and has walked beside me as a friend since that first class. God has shown me that I am not alone, He is always with and in me. He asked me to step out in faith to become a group leader the following year. I enter into this study of Revelation with great expectation, knowing we will keep growing until that very Day.

  80. I so relate to Judy’s comment! I began BSF in Sept. 1998 with the study of Genesis (I believe it was the 1st time offered.) I attended an evening class. Would rush home; put my kids to bed; then prepare for bed myself & sit in bed & read the notes. I couldn’t wait to read the next day. I’ve grown by leaps & bounds in my love & knowledge of God’s Word. I’m still in BSF today. I’ve attended an evening class, day class, international online class, and now a nearby SDG. During the summers, I continue studying God’s Word using WordGo studies. I thank God often for His gift of BSF!

The one exception was that I wasn’t a Christian yet nor did I know if I even believed in God. But when God told Moses His name…. I AM…tell them I AM has sent you…I knew He was real. God continues to “grow me up in the Lord”. What a privileged upbringing I’ve had.

    • Congratulations Cheryl, I have done BSF for years. Some of the studies 2x and I always get something new out of it. As a first time study with BSF my biggest advise is to never feel your not prepared enough to attend. If your lesson isn’t complete, you don’t feel like it. That is the enemy trying to stop you from coming. He will work very hard to stop you from growing. Excited for you, it just keeps getting better!

  84. I grew up in a works based faith until I was 18. But thankfully, through the drawing power of the Holy Spirit, I became a true follower of Jesus Christ at age 26. After moving to a new city with my husband’s job, a neighbor introduced me to BSF. I had NEVER opened a Bible, or prayed before. BSF has literally been my personal discipleship program through the years. I embrace the paradigms of BSF for its distinctive individual study, warm Christian fellowship, and dynamic leadership. It’s as much a part of me from Sept – May, as my own name.

  89. Hollie, I was a new student of BSF last year. My oldest daughter went home to be with our Lord on 3/18/24. These two Bible studies, John and Revelation are my timely gift from God. My daughter loved (loves) Jesus so I know where she is. Being reminded of God’s assurances and promises is my daily bread. God takes care of us if we let Him and I am committed to allowing His plan for my life to be lived out as I grieve my precious daughter and as I study with my sisters in Christ.

  115. My first complete BSF study was Revelation. My husband jumped in as well. After a couple years, he became a children’s leader then a men’s leader. I served as a greeter and have assisted with children. Those fun serving opportunities are just a side-dish to the main course of diving deep into God’s Word and learning and growing together. As a couple that lives, serves and works together, learning through BSF has enhanced our marriage; it has given us wisdom to lead at work and in ministry. Mostly, the Lord has given us joy and a greater hunger for the Word as we grow closer to Him and our brothers and sisters in Christ. I am so excited about BSF, I had the opportunity to share the info on social media with a friend in Australia; she then shared it in her ministry’s newsletter that goes out to 241 churches! Thank You, Lord, for BSF and all those that serve in this organization!

I had been doing studies for all 14 years of my walk, but BSF helped me learn to delve deeper and understand what God was saying to me in His word. To this day, I still use the BSF method somewhat along with what another Bible teacher taught me to learn in the summer months with a friend who is also in BSF during the year.

  134. Hello, I signed up to attend the in person study group in Green Cove Springs, FL. Since that time we are in the process of moving to South Carolina. I am very excited for Revelation: The hope. Is it possible for me to attend online? I have my book.

    Thank you

  136. Hi. I am looking forward to study Revelation this year. I came to know the Lord 41 years ago while studying Matthew in BSF. I was in 6&half years, 2&half a children’s leader. I was in the night class as working for a while. I retired 8 years ago & have been back in BSF—as this Bible study is best & the ladies are the sweetest I’ve ever been around. I love BSF! To God be the glory, great things He has done!

  139. Hopefully everyone will take it to heart that He (Jesus) mentions **His God** (the Father, *post ascension*) 4 times in a single verse in Revelation 3:12. That concept must be vitally important and to take it to heart for it to be repeated that much. But that concept is applicable only for those who have eyes to see and ears to hear.

  143. Step 4: Practice the words
Step 5: Share the words with others
Step 6: Have them share the words with others

BSF is FAR more than a “Bible study”.
But you didn’t say how it is more. Maybe you don’t know how. I realize no hired man with a Bible degree will tell you how, but I can. We should “one another” about it. It’s more obedient to God’s commands of church than pulpit and pew church.

    Thank you.

    • Hi Bexky, I’m sorry you’re having trouble finding a group!
There are two ways you can find an online group:
      1. If you’d like to find a group that’s local to you that meets online, visit join.bsfinternational.org, select the “In-Person” button, enter your location, and search the list results for a class that has either “Online” or “In-Person and Online” as a designator near the name of the location. If you see a class meeting that looks perfect but doesn’t say they have online groups, it may be worth reaching out to the class to ask if that is an option. Simply click “More Info” and “Contact” to reach out to the class.
      2. If you’d like to join a global group that meets online, visit join.bsfinternational.org and select the “Online” button. There are groups that meet at all hours of the day and night, so you can use the filters to find the group that best fits your schedule.
If you need help, use the “Need Help?” button in the bottom right hand corner and someone can help you find a group. I’m praying you will find a group for Revelation!

      Blessings, Meredith

I know is going to be complicated for me to understand as being a person with Latino descendency sometimes I struggle with words and phrases, but I know that God will give me His Heart and I will take it whole; Thanks to BSF in God’s Glory.

  150. 45 years ago I was part of a Pilot class in Philippians. This was when we lived in Fargo. I was a Children’s Leader when we studied John. 1/2 way through the study I found I was expecting. I dropped out after our son John was born. There was a 9 year gap between our daughter and 2 other sons. I had my hands full. We moved to Illinois. BSF was advised at our church, the Teaching Leader was a member of my church. Our 2 year old son John was able to be studying John and I was again a Children’s Leader. We moved a few other times and I had 2 more sons. Wherever we lived I continued in BSF because I love this method of studying God’s Word! I’m excited to study Revelation for a 2nd time. I tell everyone I know about BSF and encourage them to sign up because I know they’ll love it!

  157. I first joined BSF in 1999, when my twin daughters had turned 2 years old. The studies, lectures and fellowship were a great blessing. GENESIS was the course that year, and it was fantastic. I have been through several other studies, in the OT and NT…and now, in retirement, I’m excited to finally have the opportunity to study REVELATION.

  159. Shalom! I am so grateful that I got the chance to attend BSF after I retired. I attend a church where I first learned about BSF, so I was looking forward to entering a new relationship with Jesus. My only regret is that I didn’t know about BSF earlier in my life. But now that I do know, I am determined to follow Miss Johnson’s footsteps, and share His Word in discipleship this first year as a leader in BSF.

  161. Hi! I recall attending the Day Class in Riverside wondering how I would ‘fit in’. I wanted the Bible Study, but was not sure about the Fellowship part!
I had been invited persistently by a friend and finally brought my daughters, too. The Children’s Program was/is
    Great!
As a Children’s Leader then Discussion/Group Leader I can attest to God’s Faithfulness to equip for what He has called us to do. Therefore, be His Ambassadors as we study/read aloud and ‘testify’ to the Word of God for such a time as this. For the Time is Near!

  163. I have studied the Word with BSF for 40+ years. Jesus saved me and called me His friend 58 years ago this July. Philippines 3:10 is my life verse: That I may know Him and the power of His resurrection…BSF has helped me live out this goal. My two adult sons participated in the children’s program. Each received Jesus as his personal LORD and Savior during his time in BSF. Today, they are raising their children to love and serve the LORD. Thank you BSF for impacting my life and the lives of my kids and grandchildren for the kingdom of God and His forever glory.❤️Debbie

    • Your post reminded me of the anger and hate I had for someone who tried to sabotage me at work. I had bad feelings for him for a long time. BSF reminded me to love my enemy. I had a heartfelt change as I love God and want to obey Him. To do that I had to forgive this person and not hate him in my heart. I prayed for help. The Holy Spirit took this hatred and anger from me and I am so thankful for this answer to prayer.

  169. I found BSF when I moved to San Diego in 1971! My husband was in the military and this study group was my life line. I had moved from a small town in the south to this huge city! Cultural shock! Finding BSF gave me the added security I needed and realized God’s people are everywhere. I still have all my studies from back then!

    • In 1977, 2 friends who were CLs in the Original San Antonio class invited me to come & bring my 2year old daughter. I did not even have a Bible, I was on the waiting list for a year & I came monthly for the lecture & checked in to stay on the list. It was Rosemary’s last year as TL & NOBODY quit. . I got in the next year , for PAUL. I am still in-3moves later. All 7 grandchildren have been in BSF!
