The Secret to John’s Faith
How did this disciple persevere in a lifetime of adversity?

If you could go back in time, what would you do differently? How have you matured? How have you changed?
For each of us, time offers the benefit of hindsight. We learn from our mistakes, we strive to be better, and through the work of the Holy Spirit we grow in our faith.
When we combine life experience with a commitment to pursue Christ, God grows our wisdom. Over time, we see the world differently.
This is the gift we discover in John’s Gospel. Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, most scholars believe that the apostle John wrote his Gospel account toward the end of his life, 20 to 30 years after the other three were written. Early Christian writings even suggest that John may been familiar with the three Gospels before choosing what to include in his own.*
After a lifetime reflecting on the words and teaching of Jesus, John carefully crafted his eyewitness account. Today we benefit from his hindsight. John’s Gospel is known for its unique content and timeline, but the author’s tone truly sets it apart.
John’s enduring faith and love for Christ are evident in every chapter and verse.
So how can we build a faith like John? When we examine his life, we uncover the source of his hope, freedom, and perseverance.
After a lifetime of reflecting on the words and teaching of Jesus, John carefully crafted his eyewitness account.
Hope in adversity
After Jesus’s resurrection and ascension to heaven, God grew the early Church. But as Jesus had warned in Matthew 10:16-39, the lives of these early Christians were marked by pain and persecution. While the Holy Spirit sustained these faithful believers, Jewish and Roman officials ruthlessly persecuted anyone who proclaimed the name of Christ.
As one of Jesus’s disciples, John would have been at the center of this violent turmoil. He watched as government officials brutally martyred his friends and family, one by one. From Acts 12:1-2 we know that John’s brother James was among the first to be “put to death with the sword” in the name of Jesus.
In AD 70, John would have grieved the deaths of an estimated 1.1 million Jews and Christians during the Roman siege of Jerusalem. And as his brothers and sisters in Christ suffered, John himself was hunted, persecuted, and exiled.
John referred to himself as “your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus” (Revelation 1:9).
As we reflect on those words, we realize that John fixed his eyes on Christ’s kingdom to come. Through Jesus’s love and sacrifice, John’s commitment to Christ remained steadfast. When he could have written a memoir of bitterness, John wrote a Gospel of hope.
Through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, the words recorded by John encourage us today, “for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).

Freedom through humility
Before writing his Gospel account or shepherding the early Church, John was simply a fisherman who chose to follow Christ. Known by Jesus as the “sons of thunder” in Mark 3:17, John and his brother James were two of the most vocal disciples from the Gospel accounts. In Mark 10:35-36, we read about the brothers’ request of Jesus, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
Asking for a place of prominence, James and John wanted greatness. But somewhere in the course of following Christ, John’s perspective changed. In his writing, John elevated the name of Jesus above all else. Instead of taking credit as “John, best among the apostles,” the author calls himself, “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
The same man who once sought eternal greatness later chose to remain anonymous. Instead of proclaiming his own name, John anchored his identity in Christ.
Through simply becoming “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” John proclaimed his identity in Christ alone. Instead of seeking fame or authority, John rested in his position as child of God (John 1:12).

Peace in perseverance
Through a lifetime of adversity, John persevered in faith. By shifting his perspective toward eternity, John held fast to these words of Jesus.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
John’s faith was remarkable, but his story reminds us that God faithfully matures ordinary men and women. When we spend a lifetime reflecting on the person and words of Christ, we too can discover hope, freedom, and perseverance.
Jesus Himself said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).

Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Well, I find the last sentence very confusing. I love the reference to children. You mention that you are a new dad! I was a preschool teacher for @ 13 years. Kids are so wonderful. The have their little spats between each other in the classroom or on the playground whether it is envy over a toy or just a case of one-upsmanship. We teachers would intervene if the spat got physical. Often, we just needed to step back and let the 3 or 4 or 5-yr-olds settle the issue amongst themselves. Then it was over. Kids move on. They live in the present, in the moment. I think I agree with you that God never changes (back to your sentence). I’m in the modern world and will go with the God of the New Testament.

However, the truth that Jesus spoke of is that which comes from being obedient to His instructions. John had learned this while following his Master on earth and he wants us to understand that not any truth will set us free but only the “one truth” that really matters…”the truth of the Gospel.” Do you want to be free? I am so excited for this coming study of John. After last year’s study, learning that we are no different from the children of Israel, I feel God is now going to show us how to live, serve and love the way He intended. Please note the ***conditionality*** in remaining as Christ’s friend in John 15:14; “You are my friends *****if you do***** what I command.” (Luke 6:46-49)
Good point. I liken this to be part and parcel of the Gospel of the Kingdom and not the unconditional grace of the Gospel of the Grace of God; Acts 20:24. Unfortunately, some Churches mix them indiscriminately leaving gaping holes in the believers’ faith.

2002-2003 was my first BSF study. It was the book of John. During that study I learned deep in my heart that I was indeed loved by the Lord. What a wonderful gift I was given.

Im sitting here on the Oregon coast at 6 AM reading this blog that brought me to tears. Reading his Word, this sentence really struck me:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.“ Experiencing His peace and the glory of His creation, I was overjoyed knowing that my God, who gave His only son, will provide peace that transcends all understanding despite what the world may bring!!

I am excited about BSF this year and learning about John. Attending BSF helps me to grow in the Lord and
in truth. Never thought about why John did not put his name though out the book but it does make sense
that he started out wanted to sit next to Jesus but by the end of his life he felt he was not even worthy to
have his name in this book but just to be know has the disciple who Jesus loved.

Hi Gabriel. In Mark 10 (quoted in our blog post), James and John are the ones who make the request of Jesus. In Matthew 20, the same account identifies James and John’s mother as the one who makes the request. We do not know the reason that these gospel writers chose to focus on different aspects of the account, but the overall message remains the same!
I have studied the Gospel of John before. However in my fallen nature, l believed that John’s identity of “the disciple whom Jesus loved” meant that he was the most favoured and exalted among all the disciples. This belief was fuelling my pride and made me miss the real love of our Savior.

No other book of the Bible has changed my life more than the Gospel of John. I used to take pride in all the “stuff” I did for the Lord, somehow thinking that I was accumulating Heavenly points and putting myself ahead of other Christians in God”s eyes. Compared to Christ’s covering me with His Blood and Righteousness, anything I do is no more than rubbish compared to Jesus’ unsurpassable gift. Without Jesus, I am nothing; without Jesus I can do nothing. The book of John beautifully illustrates how to lead a life of humility, dependance and commitment to Jesus, completly content with what I have or do not have. You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands, and my faith rests entirely in you.
Am so looking forward to the study of this divinely inspired Book of John. BSF has been & continues to grow, encourage, inspire & build wonderful relationships with other woman for me. I truly am blest beyond words. You did a wonderful introduction to this upcoming study of John. Also keep in mind that John as well as Peter and the rest were also influenced by the writings of Paul and “the wisdom given to him’ (2Peter 3:16-18) regarding the Gospel of the Grace of God ‘in which much is hard to understand’ In my mind John 3:16 had its roots in the Pauline letters.

Looking forward to this fall study on the book of St. John
Hello, I did BSF before and loved it. Is there a group (even online) where there can be school age teaching? My boys are 5 and 7. If there is something for them, I can join an online group at the same time.
Many groups have student programs. Check the list of classes in your area to see which ones do. I am sure there is also online classes if an in person class is not available. BSF updated the student program last year and it’s awesome 🤩
I’m looking forward to this study, which will be my 12th year. This past year struck me and others in my class that we are reliving the Bible in many ways. So many people attempting to awaken all as to what was going on then and now, which is good vs. evil. I’m so tired of all that is occurring in this world. It’s right front of us and still, many people are quiet. My prayers continue.

Thank you for an introductory outlook for the book of John with Hope in Adversity, Freedom Through Humility, and Peace in Perserverence. Though I have had other studies on the book of John, I am most anxious to get started on this one because it is put together by BSF. I have enjoyed, and see myself growing more, in understanding of God’s word through all of my BSF studies. I am always led to think more, and research even more, of connective and related scriptures in each study.

The gospel of John is one of my favorite books. I’m really looking forward to studying it again with BSF especially from this perspective through the eyes of John the beloved disciple.
I saw Karen’s comment and just had to add something. I, too, have been in BSF 39 years in various leadership positions and am 81 years old. This year I felt the Holy spirit nudging me to leave and take on new responsibilities in my church. I am so excited to have received the bound BSF John book and will continue to study on my own. Even though it won’t be the same as being in class, I feel it still will keep me connected. How I love the excellence of the way all these studies are put together.

I love this so much. I can’t wait for BSF to start back up. I have grown my faith in the last 7 years through going to BSF. I personally wish it would go for 12 months. Of course I’m retired so I’m selfishly not thinking of the young mothers when I say this who definitely need a break. Maybe a BSF for women over 60 or 70? Ha ha.

As I continue in my 39th year as a BSF group leader, I am excited and eager to be a part of the study of John. Each time I have done this study, God has given me new insight and direction for my life. I know this time it will still be what God wants for my life in serving Him.I’m now 81 yr.old, but until He calls me out of
BSF, or calls me home, I will persevere.

Isaiah 61:3 BSF I was given a diagnosis of cancer the first year I joined BSF. BSF kept me focused on Jesus the Author and Finisher of my faith. The doctors wanted to know what I was doing because I did not get any of the side effects others received from the Chemo or the radiation. The power of prayer and the BSF study of Isaiah in community with other women lifted my spirit so my immune system that God gave to me could work at its highest level. My body was delivered from an autoimmune disease by the Grace of God Almighty. Jesus is my healer. He is my strength, My Savior and my coming King. BSF keeps me focused on what really matters. Life can distract us on what really matters. Flesh is a terrible leader. Isaiah 61:3 writes “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
I have done John study at an American church with English speaking sisters in Christ. Today i am an online leader for Arabic speaking sisters. I can’t wait to start a new adventure with John.

I am so looking forward to this John study. I did the John study in 2017 as at that time Australia was following there academic year which runs Feburary to December, not the American one of Sept- May. That time was the first time I had studied John in depth and what I learnt blew me away. For the fist time I saw Jesus Humanity, he was god but also truly human, with family, he had FRIENDS, He grieved, loved, partied just like we do!. I am eagerly awaiting what the Lord will show me this time through.
I was blessed to read this about John. He was the beloved one Jesus loved.. I am enlightened by John writing of Hope by power of the Holy Spirit I’m looking forward to BSF study this fall. My husband Larry went to be with Jesus Monday October 3, 2022. Hope with Jesus to live alone.

I love and appreciate the history behind the events. Especially the persecution of the early church, the disciples and their ministry to the Gospel. I have believed in God all my life, although I never practiced any one denomination. Born Jewish and Methodist, my parents were reform and we celebrated Christian and Jewish holidays year round until I and my siblings were older, then just the Jewish holidays. Aside from a brief few years of Sunday school, my studies ended there. Life continued with my belief “in God” but that was it. I would sometimes pray when in need, sometimes go to church. Fast forward many years and God was pursuing me big time, two people, one from work and one from the neighborhood where I walked my dog, telling me about BSF and inviting me. I did not respond initially but finally went with my work friend. God is so truly amazing and wonderful, He had chosen me before the foundation of the earth (1 Peter)! While sitting in BSF lecture my first year I received Christ, all of a sudden the Light came upon me, my relationship with the Lord truly began and twelve years later today I’m still in BSF! Can’t wait to begin my 13th BSF year studying John for the second time to glean even more truths! Glory to God for doing His great works through BSF!

I will share wit this information for “A gospel for the Thinking person…”T
The first-century world was a swirl of ideas, value, and symbols, not unlike our own. John’s is a Gospel that is especially good for the thinking person. Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which present comprehensive and similar(“synoptic”) overviews of the Lord’s life, John is a highly stylized arrangement of carefully selected events of the Lord’s life, all directed toward in one major purpose; that readers might find life by believing in Jesus as the Christ. John’s goal is not belief for its own sake , but belief in order to have life (John 20:20-31).
For that reason, this book is vitally important for modern-day Christians. We tend to apply our faith only to certain private and “religious” settings, but leave it behind when we go into the public arena. The message of John cuts through that way of thinking and living. Jesus is our bridge between that which is eternal, spiritual, and supernatural, and the everyday, human, natural world. He is he divine Word of God, yet He became human and have our experience (1:1,14).
How can our faith become relevant to the day-to-day circumstances we face? In the Gospel of John, Jesus lived the message that He preached. And as we come to know Him and follow Him, we can experience the life that He gives.
What a great teaching! God is really working through you. I thank God that I was introduced to BSF by my sister several years ago. I have developed a greater appreciation and love for God and his word through your God led bible studies.

So excited to start the book of John. I first joined 2 years ago thinking “I am not sure I can do this each week”, and now I can’t not do this each week. I miss it during our summer break! So thankful for BSF and our group.
The book of John has been a study done at our church in the past. However, I am looking forward to studying John with my BSF group. This will be my wife and my 4th year with BSF and I know we will learn a lot this coming study. What we like most is to discuss the lessons together other than in our group. But, in order to get the most of this study, praying for God’s help learning the word John has written. Now it’s wait for the first meeting.

I have always heard that the first book for a new Christian to read is John’s gospel. Wanting to know God, I started with John and moved to Romans. The power and grace of this apostle is still amazing. I can’t wait to dive into this study.
“From Acts 12:1-2 we know that John’s brother James was among the first to be “put to death with the sword” in the name of Jesus.”
It is correctly noted that James son of Zebedee died a violent death early on in imitation of his Lord. Was this the ‘baptism’ that Jesus said that both James and John would experience? If so what about Mark 10:39.

BSF has been my lifeline. In 2022, exactly one year ago, my older brother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My younger brother has been battling a different type of cancer for 16 years. I took over care needs for my 90 year old mom, and also took over a complex trust and all fiduciary responsibilities. I almost said to my leader in BSF that there was no way I could commit to the Kingdom divided study, but the Lord told me that even though I could not do all of the work, He still wanted me to be in it. God was right! I cannot tell you how much I was blessed, and how much I learned and grew. I am now memorizing scriptures regularly, and spending daily time in the Word, and telling others about what I am doing in a life that has been very shaky and certainly out of my control. But, God tells me to keep my eyes on Him. Thank you for all you do in this ministry. I am excited to study the Book of John! By the grace of God, my brothers are still with us.
God promises that if I will diligently study the Bible HE will use it to increase my faith. So, I am so excited to resume my study on the Gospel of John. It is a Gospel account rich with beautiful imagery and theological significance. There is so much to learn about Jesus Christ on the Gospel of John. Where I once were filled with emptiness and discontent, I now can have a vibrant reason for living.

I just received the BSF book for the upcoming study of John. The study book is fantastic and I am so excited to be looking at John again, and seeing how much I have grown, and will continue grow, since the John study 7 years ago. BSF has been a huge blessing to me, I treasure the studies, the women, and most importantly God’s word and work in my life.

trials and tribulations, he did not put the focus on himself but on the Lord Jesus. He is the one that

I love the pattern God has given to BSF for the study and application of His Word! I’m a grateful participant as well as a former leader.I love that BSF holds the Word of God in highest esteem and without compromise! We study God’s inerrant, treasured Word. I’m a little concerned by the statement in paragraph 4 which seems to take away from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit thru John. I’m sure you don’t intend for it to sound like man centered theology because I know this is absolutely totally in opposition to what BSF teaches. I have learned so much about the solid doctrines of God thru my study at BSF. For that, I am ever grateful!

BSF offers everything I have always wanted in a Bible study. I can’t thank the Lord enough for bringing me to it! I love BSF.

I joined BSF in 2009 after my husband John had passed away. A friend asked me to join and I decided that I needed more time with God. I decided to continue after that year and I am still a part of it. God had a plan. I was only going to try it for the one year, but his plan was for me to continue. Since I started, I have lost my only child in 2019. I remarried in 2017 to a wonderful man and then he passed away December 2022. If not for Lord, where would I be. 🙏

John was given a tough assignment of persevering faith to move through all the turbulent times in those early days. However, Jesus Christ met him in an extraordinary experience through the visions he saw of our Lord, He has certainly passed on to us as believers not only an understanding of what will happen in the future, with the guaranteed victory for the saints, but as well, reminds us the Spirit of our God uses not only people, but angels to accomplish His purposes, and protect us and they worship the Creator – in Revelation Ch 22:9, the angel says: for I am your fellow servant, of your brethren the prophets and of them who keep the sayings of this book: worship God. We are part of that great cloud of witnesses that follow the Lamb and worship Him in spirit and truth.
Thanks for sharing the insight of John’s hindsight. In Chinese “hindsight” is always derogatory, not commendatory.

Holding on to the teachings of Christ may we grow in steadfast love, enduring faith and a hope that will help us through all turmoils
Reflective insights comes to mind when looking back at how God has been with me and all He has done. I am able to thank Him and have renewed hope for the future God has for me.
I’m looking forward to study John who aspired greatness but God led him to grow to desiring God increase and he decrease. I’m also looking forward to study about a life of hard times but he wrote giving hope instead of despair.

This blog whets my appetite for my third time to study John. While “third time” can imply repetition or boredom, I long to go through John again and uncover truths that will change knowledge to a more love relationship to my Jesus. Thank you for this blog!
