The Secret to John’s Faith
How did this disciple persevere in a lifetime of adversity?
Bennett Rolan
If you could go back in time, what would you do differently? How have you matured? How have you changed?
For each of us, time offers the benefit of hindsight. We learn from our mistakes, we strive to be better, and through the work of the Holy Spirit we grow in our faith.
When we combine life experience with a commitment to pursue Christ, God grows our wisdom. Over time, we see the world differently.
This is the gift we discover in John’s Gospel. Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, most scholars believe that the apostle John wrote his Gospel account toward the end of his life, 20 to 30 years after the other three were written. Early Christian writings even suggest that John may been familiar with the three Gospels before choosing what to include in his own.*
After a lifetime reflecting on the words and teaching of Jesus, John carefully crafted his eyewitness account. Today we benefit from his hindsight. John’s Gospel is known for its unique content and timeline, but the author’s tone truly sets it apart.
John’s enduring faith and love for Christ are evident in every chapter and verse.
So how can we build a faith like John? When we examine his life, we uncover the source of his hope, freedom, and perseverance.
After a lifetime of reflecting on the words and teaching of Jesus, John carefully crafted his eyewitness account.
Hope in adversity
After Jesus’s resurrection and ascension to heaven, God grew the early Church. But as Jesus had warned in Matthew 10:16-39, the lives of these early Christians were marked by pain and persecution. While the Holy Spirit sustained these faithful believers, Jewish and Roman officials ruthlessly persecuted anyone who proclaimed the name of Christ.
As one of Jesus’s disciples, John would have been at the center of this violent turmoil. He watched as government officials brutally martyred his friends and family, one by one. From Acts 12:1-2 we know that John’s brother James was among the first to be “put to death with the sword” in the name of Jesus.
In AD 70, John would have grieved the deaths of an estimated 1.1 million Jews and Christians during the Roman siege of Jerusalem. And as his brothers and sisters in Christ suffered, John himself was hunted, persecuted, and exiled.
John referred to himself as “your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus” (Revelation 1:9).
As we reflect on those words, we realize that John fixed his eyes on Christ’s kingdom to come. Through Jesus’s love and sacrifice, John’s commitment to Christ remained steadfast. When he could have written a memoir of bitterness, John wrote a Gospel of hope.
Through the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, the words recorded by John encourage us today, “for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).
For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
Freedom through humility
Before writing his Gospel account or shepherding the early Church, John was simply a fisherman who chose to follow Christ. Known by Jesus as the “sons of thunder” in Mark 3:17, John and his brother James were two of the most vocal disciples from the Gospel accounts. In Mark 10:35-36, we read about the brothers’ request of Jesus, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”
Asking for a place of prominence, James and John wanted greatness. But somewhere in the course of following Christ, John’s perspective changed. In his writing, John elevated the name of Jesus above all else. Instead of taking credit as “John, best among the apostles,” the author calls himself, “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
The same man who once sought eternal greatness later chose to remain anonymous. Instead of proclaiming his own name, John anchored his identity in Christ.
Through simply becoming “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” John proclaimed his identity in Christ alone. Instead of seeking fame or authority, John rested in his position as child of God (John 1:12).
The same man who once sought eternal greatness later chose to remain anonymous.
Peace in perseverance
Through a lifetime of adversity, John persevered in faith. By shifting his perspective toward eternity, John held fast to these words of Jesus.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
John’s faith was remarkable, but his story reminds us that God faithfully matures ordinary men and women. When we spend a lifetime reflecting on the person and words of Christ, we too can discover hope, freedom, and perseverance.
Jesus Himself said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32).

I have read J. Keener’s entry about the Gospel of John study. HOWEVER, there is not a way to send a comment to him. This is the only spot that I found with the comment feature. Please pass this on to J. Keener if you are able. To: J. Keener, BSF Video Producer / I like your quote: “If you would tell me the heart of a man, tell me not what he reads, but what he rereads.” I’m inspired to write to you based on this sentence in your writing: God never changes, but we do. Miraculously, God’s Word relates to every experience life has to offer. Scripture is deeply personal and only becomes more personal each time we return to it. It seems to me that the writer(s) of EXODUS in The Decalogue Chap. 20 verses 4-5-6-7 show God to be quite a frightening character: “You shall not make yourself a carved image … you shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God and I punish the father’s fault in the sons, the grandsons, and the great-grandsons of those who hate me; but I show kindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. “you shall not utter the name of Yahweh your God to misuse it [either in a lie or irreverently], for Yahweh will not leave unpunished the man who utters his name to misuse it. Oh, my! Look out for this Old Testament God! A writer at AscensionPress writes: The expressions used in the Bible need to be understood in the context of the culture in which they were written. Is the God in the New Testament Gospels painted with a different brush? For example in Matthew Chap. 11 verses 25-26: At that time Jesus exclaimed, “I bless you, Father, Lord of heaven and of earth, for hiding these things from the learned and the clever and revealing them to mere children. Yes, Father, for that is what it pleased you to do. Everything has been entrusted to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, just as no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Well, I find the last sentence very confusing. I love the reference to children. You mention that you are a new dad! I was a preschool teacher for @ 13 years. Kids are so wonderful. The have their little spats between each other in the classroom or on the playground whether it is envy over a toy or just a case of one-upsmanship. We teachers would intervene if the spat got physical. Often, we just needed to step back and let the 3 or 4 or 5-yr-olds settle the issue amongst themselves. Then it was over. Kids move on. They live in the present, in the moment. I think I agree with you that God never changes (back to your sentence). I’m in the modern world and will go with the God of the New Testament.
Thank you for these wonderful truths! Looking forward to the lessons and the life transformation!
The following statement at the end of this story, “Jesus Himself said, “’If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free’” (John 8:31-32),” is one used by so many people about truth relating to so many different topics. However, the truth that Jesus spoke of is that which comes from being obedient to His instructions. John had learned this while following his Master on earth and he wants us to understand that not any truth will set us free but only the “one truth” that really matters…”the truth of the Gospel.” Do you want to be free? Set your heart on the truth that really sets us free. And, “you will be free indeed.”
Truly. Endorse this. The hangup/ constraint is just the dawning of,and recognising, the truth
. Little / young children, are often an excellent mouthpiece of Jesus. Hence the … “Kingdom of God is like…
Child”

Ms. Roland, Thank you for sharing your gift for writing with us. This will be my third time around in the BSF study of John. There is always golden nuggets uncovered in any BSF study no matter how many times you participate.
I want to especially thank you for footnoting a comment with a source reference that is not Scripture. I love BSF but I can’t count the number of times I have thought “Where did they get that!” regarding non-scriptural comments. Going forward, is there someone I can reach out to (other than the local group and teaching leader) at BSF for clarification?
Thank you.
You mentioned that John’s story reminds us that God faithfully matures ordinary people – I see hope for myself. I am looking forward to learning the book of John.
May God help me so that I humble myself and am able to say that Jesus loves me than no one else. Thank you Father in heaven for your word that has kept us strong and hopeful.

Anticipating, The Holy Spirit’s powerful movement in Bible Study Fellowship, this season!
Beautifully written, Bennett! Hope, freedom, and perseverance- all virtues that are only gained thru the Holy Spirit and gained only thru our own life experiences. Things worth achieving are done thru time which demands patience, a fourth virtue. Suffering to character to perseverance to hope. Amen. Nicely done, Ms. Rolan!

Thank you Ms Bennet Rolan for the deep history of John, which i did not know. I am inspired by his deep suffering which he endured all the way, and the way he desired greatness. But in the course of following Jesus he changed his mind. And later he wanted to be anonymous. Now am looking forward to studying Jonhn’s book, praying to God to grow my faith like that of John. On my own I can do nothing.
Looking forward to spending time reflecting and being challenged by the Gospel of John. Have just joined BSF

This will be my third visit with the John study. I pray God will give us fresh eyes, renewed minds and “4th soil” hearts for His Word to take root and produce pleasing fruit!

Hi Patricia, you can visit the store at store.mybsf.org.
Thank you for writing this blog, Bennett. It helps me get ready for BSF in September
I am so looking forward to this study!
Wow! Can’t wait to study the gospel according to John for a second time. I don’t have a favorite book of the Bible yet but John might be that book that becomes my favorite book of all time.
John gives us a beautiful message of hope and assurance that our Lord and Savior will always be with us no matter how dire circumstances may appear in this life.
Inspiring to me.
Please note the ***conditionality*** in remaining as Christ’s friend in John 15:14; “You are my friends *****if you do***** what I command.” (Luke 6:46-49)
Good point. I liken this to be part and parcel of the Gospel of the Kingdom and not the unconditional grace of the Gospel of the Grace of God; Acts 20:24. Unfortunately, some Churches mix them indiscriminately leaving gaping holes in the believers’ faith.
Just received my study book for John. So looking forward to this study.
How do I get my book?
Hi Colleen, please visit store.mybsf.org.
Thank you for this blog. Looking forward to studying the book of John. The disciple whom Jesus loved.
Thank you Bennett.Building a faith is a very big challenge. I have been seeing that John’gospel was difficult but when I read this éditorial I know that the Holy Spirit can do what I cannot, as I love impregnate my life with the God’ Word !!
My studies thru BSF have been a blessing. They have taken me thru the history and trials of the people of God. Brought me closer in my relationship with God.
Looking forward tonthe study of John
Thank you for the insight as to why John was called, “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” I have studied John twice with BSF and always wondered about that phrase. Now I know! I am anxiously awaiting September to grow closer to the Lord through this study and to see what new insights and growth will come.
May God give each of us insight into His plan for us, His love, wisdom and salvation that is available to all.
2002-2003 was my first BSF study. It was the book of John. During that study I learned deep in my heart that I was indeed loved by the Lord. What a wonderful gift I was given.
Thank you BSF for your wonderful services to the Lord and to help us each grow in our faith through all the studies, blogs, speeches, etc.
God Bless you!
Thank you for the insight as to why John was called, “the disciple whom Jesus loved.” I have studied John twice with BSF and always wondered about it. Now I know. I am anxiously awaiting September to begin my 19 years of BSF. May God give each of us insight into His plan, His love, wisdom and salvation that is available to all.
I am excited to start John”s study and am looking forward to hearing from the Word what the Spirit is saying to me through John”s study..
Amazing powerful study can’t wait to dive in!
“John’s commitment to Christ remained steadfast. When he could have written a memoir of bitterness, John wrote a Gospel of hope.” Through this study, I hope to build my knowledge in God’s Word and put on God’s armor in preparation for the persecution that is already being experienced by so many believers; and through persecution, emit joy and peace that passes all understanding – through Jesus Christ!
What a great preview into the book ofJohn. Cannot wait to dive in and share in our special Men’s group. Year three for me and looking for many more with BSF.
Excited to to know more about Jesus through John’s unique Holy Spirit inspired perspective
I am a Black male that goes to a All White Church, Adversity is very common for me! Please continue to pray for me.
Williiam, praying for you. Stay strong; keep the faith.
I’ll never walk in your shoes William. But, you’re in my prayers. God is the arbitrator of justice and your Faith will always prove enough to silent the ignorant. Amen.
Im sitting here on the Oregon coast at 6 AM reading this blog that brought me to tears. Reading his Word, this sentence really struck me:
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.“ Experiencing His peace and the glory of His creation, I was overjoyed knowing that my God, who gave His only son, will provide peace that transcends all understanding despite what the world may bring!!
I am looking forward to this study of Gospel of John
Thank you
Thank you for this blog post. It is thought-provoking and insightful even in its brevity. When is BSF beginning its study of the book of John? I know it’s sometime in the fall but do we have an exact date already for this? I’m from Manila and I’d like to join an international group bible study again like I did the last time. I appreciate the diversity of perspectives in these groups. Thank you, Bennett and the entire BSF team, all glory and praise to God!
Hi Geraldine! BSF classes begin at different times around the world. Please contact your local class leadership to find out the date of your first lesson. If you do not have their contact information, you can find it by searching for your class and clicking “contact” – join.bsfinternational.org.
I am excited about BSF this year and learning about John. Attending BSF helps me to grow in the Lord and
in truth. Never thought about why John did not put his name though out the book but it does make sense
that he started out wanted to sit next to Jesus but by the end of his life he felt he was not even worthy to
have his name in this book but just to be know has the disciple who Jesus loved.
I would like to order the Study Book for the Book of John. I signed into BSF and have not been able to find it. I received an email some time ago that the Study Book for John was available. The BSF website may be convenient for computer savy people, but it is not convenient for lots of people.
Hi Dave, so sorry for the confusion! You can visit store.mybsf.org to order your book. Thank you!
Thank you for this information. It was very enlightening and can’t wait to learn more.
When we spend a lifetime reflecting on the person and words of Christ, we too can discover hope, freedom, and perseverance.
True. When John wrote this gospel of hope instead of a memoir of bitterness God was helping us to benefit from Johns account of Jesus’ person.
I am looking forward to the study of the book of John. From this blog I learn a lot about humility in Chtist.
So looking forward to this study to begin. Can hardly wait to dig deep into the man and his message of hope.
I can’t wait for the study of the book of John. The disciple whom Jesus loved.
“the disciple whom Jesus loved” humility via anonimity in giving and in service, love this!! Gonna look for the chapter, verse reference and add it to my favorite list of scriptures to meditate on.
Totally agree. We start our walk with the Lord self centered
As we mature and grow we realize it’s not about us but HIM.
I am looking forward to The Study of
John. Thanks for this Blog
Waiting to study the book of John.So many familiar verses, in this gospel, but always some new perspective, and new hope, looking forward to the study with other sisters in Christ.
The Lord who overcome the world is in my heart hallelujah that is a revelation for me to overcome from evety trial..temptation …thank you Apostle John thank you Holy Spirit..
Curious, why is BSF doing John again.? We just did it 4 years ago. It seems out of rotation. I love John but just wondering as to why….thank you
Fyi…the last study of John was in 2016/2017
Looking forward to The Study of John. The disciple whom Jesus loved.
As summer progresses, the excitement and anticipation of the new study of God’s Holy Word begins to lure me to more information of the Apostle John.
Thank you, the staff at BSF, for providing these sources for us to refer to prior to our new season.
John 1 is a wonderful summary of Christs coming, his person and purpose in the world. Gospel in a “nutshell.”
I look forward to the study of the book of John. I am aware that Billy Graham sent this book of the Bible to each person who responded with an alter call at his crusades as a follow up to get Bible Study started for each person
A very good background to the study of John🙏
I understand that it was the mother of James and John who
equested Jesus that the brother be given places of honour.
Your blog says that the brothers asked for the privilege.
Pl clarify
Hi Gabriel. In Mark 10 (quoted in our blog post), James and John are the ones who make the request of Jesus. In Matthew 20, the same account identifies James and John’s mother as the one who makes the request. We do not know the reason that these gospel writers chose to focus on different aspects of the account, but the overall message remains the same!
I have studied the Gospel of John before. However in my fallen nature, l believed that John’s identity of “the disciple whom Jesus loved” meant that he was the most favoured and exalted among all the disciples. This belief was fuelling my pride and made me miss the real love of our Savior.
Thank you BSF Team for the deeper analysis of the Word of God.
Looking forward to more growth starting September.
Amen!
These opening words into the study of the book of John by Bennett Rolan have set me into taking deep thoughts into my past – how I have fared as regards growth in wisdom & struture and my corresponding response. In all, I’ve seen the Lord’s unflinching and active demonstration of love upon my life.
Lord, grow my faith as I journey into the turbulent future that lies ahead and help me remain deliberately alert to the truth that you mature ordinary men, even men like me. As I spend time reflecting on the person and your word in this study, like John, I pray, to discover the divine hope, freedom and perseverance that are mine, in you.
Amen and Amen!
Thank you very much for this foretaste of John’s study. God indeed is maturing His people through experiences and closeness to Him.
Thank you for this insight into John. I am truly excited to study this book and hear God speak through His word and others. Praying for each of us in BSf to grow more in love with our Saviour to walk in His calling and reveal Him to those around us just like John did. Thank you to all of you in BSF for answering the call to shepherd us and help us grow.
If anyone is reading the comments that has not joined up I encourage you to take the step to join up to go deep in the Fathers word, see Him work, transform and Bless.
What joy and comfort I recieve from knowing I have brothers and sisters around the world. I love you all and pray God‘s blessing and protection over all of you! Thank you BSF staff members for ALL you do, so appreciated! Can‘t wait to study John.💜
No other book of the Bible has changed my life more than the Gospel of John. I used to take pride in all the “stuff” I did for the Lord, somehow thinking that I was accumulating Heavenly points and putting myself ahead of other Christians in God”s eyes. Compared to Christ’s covering me with His Blood and Righteousness, anything I do is no more than rubbish compared to Jesus’ unsurpassable gift. Without Jesus, I am nothing; without Jesus I can do nothing. The book of John beautifully illustrates how to lead a life of humility, dependance and commitment to Jesus, completly content with what I have or do not have. You, Lord, are all I have, and you give me all I need; my future is in your hands, and my faith rests entirely in you.
Am so looking forward to the study of this divinely inspired Book of John. BSF has been & continues to grow, encourage, inspire & build wonderful relationships with other woman for me. I truly am blest beyond words. You did a wonderful introduction to this upcoming study of John. May God be honored & receive all the Praise as these wonderful studies are written & studied for the growth of God’s Kingdom. So thankful for the dear lady who introduced me to these studies.
Appreciated this reminder as my daughter is experiencing emotional and spiritual suffering but learning to persevere — only through Christ’s indwelling Spirit can we say with Paul, “hard pressed…but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed…”
Loved the blog on John’s gospel. It gave wonderful insight about John’s life and ministry. I am looking forward for this year’s study of John’s gospel.
Hi thanks for sharing some insight on John’s life because in this season of my life I can really use some help on to find peace, hope, and perseverance for my life right now. Pray for me thanks again.
In a world full of heartache, sadness and grief what a joy to walk with John in the intimacy of love with our SAVIOUR and LORD. May GOD draw many to find HIS love and hope in this precious study.
Looking forward to this amazing study of the Gospel of John. Thank you🙏
With Gods Word one can not go wrong. After reading your blog, am encouraged to persevere in faith as I wait upon Gods promises with are yes and amen. Now I know it is good to be humble. John referred to himself as one who Jesus loved. Glory to God. Cant wait for the study of the book of John.
Thank you for these blogs that summarizes the book of John. At the same time is an inspiration for me to follow.
Blessings!
I appreciate the depth of BSF and looking forward the book of John. BSF is an essential part of my walk with the Lord. Like others have commented, the break from BSF is like being in a desert until we start again in September. Thanks for your wonderful ministry to all believers – world wide!
Also keep in mind that John as well as Peter and the rest were also influenced by the writings of Paul and “the wisdom given to him’ (2Peter 3:16-18) regarding the Gospel of the Grace of God ‘in which much is hard to understand’ In my mind John 3:16 had its roots in the Pauline letters.
After reading your blog, I am even more excited to study John this fall. May I grow in my faith and relationship with the Lord. And God will get all the glory!!!
I can’t imagine the heartbreak John experienced as he watched family & friends suffer & die under the hands of political & religious leaders of his day. Can’t wait to dig deep into this amazing book!
Hi Daniela! Thank you for your comment. I am not sure exactly what happened with that phrasing, but it is clear in the original English paragraph that Bennett Rolan is female. Something may have gotten lost or miscommunicated in translation! Thanks for reading the blog.
Looking forward to this fall study on the book of St. John
Hello, I did BSF before and loved it. Is there a group (even online) where there can be school age teaching? My boys are 5 and 7. If there is something for them, I can join an online group at the same time.
Many groups have student programs. Check the list of classes in your area to see which ones do. I am sure there is also online classes if an in person class is not available. BSF updated the student program last year and it’s awesome 🤩
I’m looking forward to this study, which will be my 12th year. This past year struck me and others in my class that we are reliving the Bible in many ways. So many people attempting to awaken all as to what was going on then and now, which is good vs. evil. I’m so tired of all that is occurring in this world. It’s right front of us and still, many people are quiet. My prayers continue.
Thank you, Bennett
I love this perspective on John finding is identity in Christ.
John grew so much, from wanting fame, to being just another disciple, the one that Jesus loved. Somehow that gives me hope for my own future life!
I am new to BSF and I thoroughly love this on John.
Thank you for an introductory outlook for the book of John with Hope in Adversity, Freedom Through Humility, and Peace in Perserverence. Though I have had other studies on the book of John, I am most anxious to get started on this one because it is put together by BSF. I have enjoyed, and see myself growing more, in understanding of God’s word through all of my BSF studies. I am always led to think more, and research even more, of connective and related scriptures in each study.
Love BSF really keeps you humble
Thank you and Praise the Lord for being introduced to BSF as it was timely and perfect spiritual call for me. Only Jesus knows what situation of crisis I have gone through but He was there to rescue me and my family. Faith is the key to be His child.
That’s just like our GOD, who provided me to come across this reading at JUST THE RIGHT TIME. I have been a Jesus follower for over 30 years, but I have found myself in a dry parched place right now. What a beautiful message of HOPE, especially to know that John knew Jesus personally, and witnessed so many other Christians persecuted, yet instead of writing how horrible things were, he continued to put his hope in JESUS CHRIST. I am excited to get back into BSF this fall, especially with the study of John. To God be all the glory! Thank you BSF! And Bennett!
The gospel of John is one of my favorite books. I’m really looking forward to studying it again with BSF especially from this perspective through the eyes of John the beloved disciple.
I saw Karen’s comment and just had to add something. I, too, have been in BSF 39 years in various leadership positions and am 81 years old. This year I felt the Holy spirit nudging me to leave and take on new responsibilities in my church. I am so excited to have received the bound BSF John book and will continue to study on my own. Even though it won’t be the same as being in class, I feel it still will keep me connected. How I love the excellence of the way all these studies are put together.
That is great encouragement in reading about John’s transformation.
Impressive insight! Looking forward even more now to the study. Blessings Bennet!
The study of John is where I started BSF nearly 20 years ago. I’m excited to revisit it at this season in my life. Thank you for the perspective you’ve offered in this blog!
Awesome
Its quite encouraging seeing Johns perservarance under persecution and will be much more encouraging to study it. Looking forward to the study of Johns gospel
Every study of bible with BSF elevates my bible study and spiritual pursuit to a new slate. Thank you
Looking forward to studying John
After reading your blog, I am even more excited to study John this fall. May I grow in my faith, but God will get all the glory!!!
I love my bsf here in Florence, AZ and am looking forward to studying all about John.
What wonderful reminders in this blog of what we have in Jesus! This world is not our home and in this chaotic world today, we can have assurance of peace through the study of His written word. So looking forward to this study of John.
Ps. 3:3-4
I want to have more faith in Jesus. Hope i can attain it through attending this class from ‘Secret to John’s faith’
Thank you
Revive Church Arvada will host a satellite women’s group (from NW Denver 120) this fall. The church is preparing to announce this group. May I have permission to use excerpts from Bennet Rolans blog?
I can email it for review/approval with your permission & email. Katherine Mausbach
We would love for you to share any post from the bsfblog! Praying for your new group!
I’m trying to purchase the book for the upcoming lesson series (The Truth About John). But I can’t find where to order it, and there is no Store link on the website when I sign into my new account. I would like to order the book prior to when my group meets.
Here you go – https://store.mybsf.org/
A very compelling invitation to dig deeper into the study John.
Thank you.
I love this so much. I can’t wait for BSF to start back up. I have grown my faith in the last 7 years through going to BSF. I personally wish it would go for 12 months. Of course I’m retired so I’m selfishly not thinking of the young mothers when I say this who definitely need a break. Maybe a BSF for women over 60 or 70? Ha ha.
Thank you for your insight into John’s faith and love for Christ! I am so looking forward to the upcoming BSF study of John! Oh that my faith and love for Christ could be like John…
Looking so forward to the BSF study of John and how it reminds all of us of God’s love for his children and how His Word today still makes such an impact on us today. How His Word builds us up and designs us into the person we are today and all for His Glory.
When I lose faith in our leaders I try to connect with my sisters and brothers in Christ for HOPE. CANT WAIT TO STUDY JOHN
I’ve studied John’s gospel several times throughout my life, including through BSF- yet I am so excited to dig into this book once again, knowing that the Lord has new lessons for me!
John’s faithfulness gives us a model to follow. Life is full of twists and turns but keeping focused on Christ allows us the strength to live.
I’ve been looking forward to the study of the gospel of John. After reading your article, I am evermore, excited! Thank you for your insight, perspective, and genuine passion for our Lord! God bless you!
I will be happy to study John with the BSF group in Gahanna, OH
Thank you so much for these encouraging words & reflections.
May God bless you always!
Highly recommend “Hope Has A Name “ … 5 week WORDGO study … whets your appetite for this fall!!!
As I continue in my 39th year as a BSF group leader, I am excited and eager to be a part of the study of John. Each time I have done this study, God has given me new insight and direction for my life. I know this time it will still be what God wants for my life in serving Him.I’m now 81 yr.old, but until He calls me out of
BSF, or calls me home, I will persevere.
Thank you for this informative background information. The Gospel of John is one of my favorite studies.
It amazes me how the Holy Spirit worked the hope and love of Jesus into John’s gospel considering all the turmoil and persecution going on around him. With our eyes of Jesus we can truly be set above our situations and live in this same hope, love and freedom.
I have always loved the book of John. I’m looking forward to a more in depth study!❤️
I’m really looking forward to the study of John’s unique gospel, so different from the rest. Can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for all of us.
Looking forward to the study of John
Beautiful read and so well summarized. How I pray that my faith my grow like that of John.
Love BSF I have learned so much enjoy going. Can’t wait till it starts up again.
I am looking forward for the study of John, in these days of difficult times, more than ever we need John to keep us close to Christ and stay on his path. Thanks to BSF for giving me this great opportunity. Blessings
What an insightful introduction to the man behind the curtain. As the “one that Christ loved” you have pulled back that curtain to give us a better perspective of John. Thank you!
After joining the BSF, I realize that my whole perspective of being a child of God has been thrown wide open. It is not just believing in the Lord, but to place my whole life in His hands and know that He will take me through all the turbulence and bring peace and gentleness to us. After reading this, really looking forward to the study on John. Thank you
Thank you for your wonderfully written blog. I hope we expect more to come. I am so looking forward to this coming year’s study.
Isaiah 61:3 BSF I was given a diagnosis of cancer the first year I joined BSF. BSF kept me focused on Jesus the Author and Finisher of my faith. The doctors wanted to know what I was doing because I did not get any of the side effects others received from the Chemo or the radiation. The power of prayer and the BSF study of Isaiah in community with other women lifted my spirit so my immune system that God gave to me could work at its highest level. My body was delivered from an autoimmune disease by the Grace of God Almighty. Jesus is my healer. He is my strength, My Savior and my coming King. BSF keeps me focused on what really matters. Life can distract us on what really matters. Flesh is a terrible leader. Isaiah 61:3 writes “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.”
I have done John study at an American church with English speaking sisters in Christ. Today i am an online leader for Arabic speaking sisters. I can’t wait to start a new adventure with John.
Bennett Rolan seems to have passion for God as she writes the books for us. I believe that you will pass well written articles to inspire me and others. I wait for you to send materials for God and for John as one who was a disciple. I am waiting to read.
Looking forward to the study of John
Do you need hope in
Adversity?
What are understand John.
1.faith, hope and love.
2.we hope that your faith
May grow.
3. You faith and hope are fixed
on God.
I thanks God to make me meet BSF but it make me knowing deeply the God’s loves. Lamentation 3:The Lord is good unto them that for Him, to the soul that seekers Him
With all my heart I am really looking forward to study the Gospel according to John. I pray for endurance, and grace not to miss God in anyhow.
Thanks for the info about John’s background. It’s easy to read and not lengthy like the lecture notes which many including myself struggle to read.I’ love reading but am at a loss as to when I could get on to do the questions. Please make the notes brief and highlight the important points for us.Let the Holy Spirit speak to us as we study His Word.
Am really blessed. Keep it up BSF.
I am so looking forward to this John study. I did the John study in 2017 as at that time Australia was following there academic year which runs Feburary to December, not the American one of Sept- May. That time was the first time I had studied John in depth and what I learnt blew me away. For the fist time I saw Jesus Humanity, he was god but also truly human, with family, he had FRIENDS, He grieved, loved, partied just like we do!. I am eagerly awaiting what the Lord will show me this time through.
I was blessed to read this about John. He was the beloved one Jesus loved.. I am enlightened by John writing of Hope by power of the Holy Spirit I’m looking forward to BSF study this fall. My husband Larry went to be with Jesus Monday October 3, 2022. Hope with Jesus to live alone.
I always learn something new every time I read John,; it helps me understand my purpose here and how much we need to lean on him in our daily lives.
Praise God for His Holy Word. Praise God for BSF and it’s coming year’s teaching of the book of John. I am excitedly looking forward to this study. In the meantime I am spending the Summer reviewing the Doctrines we studied this past year-People of Promise: Kingdom Divided. BSF study’s are as good as any seminary courses. Thank you BSF. To God be the Glory!
I love your blog about John.
It gives us hope.
Highly inspiring and encouraging as we begin the Study this year.Thank you Bennett.
I love and appreciate the history behind the events. Especially the persecution of the early church, the disciples and their ministry to the Gospel. What faith is displayed and lessons to be learned from these “ordinary” men; Jesus’ disciples/apostles. Looking forward to dig deeper in learning from the book of John.
Bennett Rolan is another woman prepared to lead BSF. The summary mentions her history background. It would positive to know Bennett’s history background.
This is such an encouraging and inspiring article. It stirred such hope in my soul that I hated for it to end. It has really whet my appetite for the study of John. You did an incredible job bringing John to life in those few words. I praise God for the passionate writing voice He’s gifted you with! I could see your faith in your well ‘spoken’ words! TGBTG!
Be blessed!
Thanks BSF for this insight into John and how his life and MO changed as he “anchored his identity in Christ” and considered himself the disciple Jesus loved.
Bless you all.
I am encouraged and looking forward for the John study.Thank you.
I have believed in God all my life, although I never practiced any one denomination. Born Jewish and Methodist, my parents were reform and we celebrated Christian and Jewish holidays year round until I and my siblings were older, then just the Jewish holidays. Aside from a brief few years of Sunday school, my studies ended there. Life continued with my belief “in God” but that was it. I would sometimes pray when in need, sometimes go to church. Fast forward many years and God was pursuing me big time, two people, one from work and one from the neighborhood where I walked my dog, telling me about BSF and inviting me. I did not respond initially but finally went with my work friend. God is so truly amazing and wonderful, He had chosen me before the foundation of the earth (1 Peter)! While sitting in BSF lecture my first year I received Christ, all of a sudden the Light came upon me, my relationship with the Lord truly began and twelve years later today I’m still in BSF! Can’t wait to begin my 13th BSF year studying John for the second time to glean even more truths! Glory to God for doing His great works through BSF!
Looking forward to this study.Blessings
I am looking forward to the upcoming study of The Gospel of John. I have been reading his Book this summer and plan on a few more readings of this book before summers end in preparation of another Sharing Fellowship Study.
Thanks for these encouraging words. I am excited about the Study of John this fall.
I will share wit this information for “A gospel for the Thinking person…”T
The first-century world was a swirl of ideas, value, and symbols, not unlike our own. John’s is a Gospel that is especially good for the thinking person. Unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke, which present comprehensive and similar(“synoptic”) overviews of the Lord’s life, John is a highly stylized arrangement of carefully selected events of the Lord’s life, all directed toward in one major purpose; that readers might find life by believing in Jesus as the Christ. John’s goal is not belief for its own sake , but belief in order to have life (John 20:20-31).
For that reason, this book is vitally important for modern-day Christians. We tend to apply our faith only to certain private and “religious” settings, but leave it behind when we go into the public arena. The message of John cuts through that way of thinking and living. Jesus is our bridge between that which is eternal, spiritual, and supernatural, and the everyday, human, natural world. He is he divine Word of God, yet He became human and have our experience (1:1,14).
How can our faith become relevant to the day-to-day circumstances we face? In the Gospel of John, Jesus lived the message that He preached. And as we come to know Him and follow Him, we can experience the life that He gives.
What a great teaching! God is really working through you. I thank God that I was introduced to BSF by my sister several years ago. I have developed a greater appreciation and love for God and his word through your God led bible studies.
Thank you! in this world we do need to be overcomers! Bring your kids and grandkids! Let’s get the next generation to fall in love with the Savior. Can’t think of a better place to get started than the wonderful gospel of John!
So excited to start the book of John. I first joined 2 years ago thinking “I am not sure I can do this each week”, and now I can’t not do this each week. I miss it during our summer break! So thankful for BSF and our group.
The book of John has been a study done at our church in the past. However, I am looking forward to studying John with my BSF group. This will be my wife and my 4th year with BSF and I know we will learn a lot this coming study. What we like most is to discuss the lessons together other than in our group. But, in order to get the most of this study, praying for God’s help learning the word John has written. Now it’s wait for the first meeting.
Thank you very Much for the wisdom of God.
Beautiful John and beautiful blog because of our Beautiful Lord. Thank you, Jesus.
Hello when will we be able to print the notes and questions for the John study?
Hi Carol! Digital materials will be available in July.
I enjoyed reading your blog and I look forward with eagerness for this next study of John. The poetry of his language always is delightful, no matter how often I read it, especially the beginning of the book. Thanks for a preview of “the disciple whom Jesus loved.”
This blog gets me excited for the John study this fall. It will be my 3rd time to study John through BSF but I always learn many new things that God has for us all.
Thank you!
I have always heard that the first book for a new Christian to read is John’s gospel. Wanting to know God, I started with John and moved to Romans. The power and grace of this apostle is still amazing. I can’t wait to dive into this study.
“From Acts 12:1-2 we know that John’s brother James was among the first to be “put to death with the sword” in the name of Jesus.”
It is correctly noted that James son of Zebedee died a violent death early on in imitation of his Lord. Was this the ‘baptism’ that Jesus said that both James and John would experience? If so what about Mark 10:39.
And they [James and John] said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized,
Looking forward to studying the book of John.
That introduction to John was so well written l may go back and read it again. Something l don’t often do.
John called himself the
disciple that Jesus loved. He was so secure in Jesus
love. To be able to say that
with such assurance is
wonderful.
BSF has been my lifeline. In 2022, exactly one year ago, my older brother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. My younger brother has been battling a different type of cancer for 16 years. I took over care needs for my 90 year old mom, and also took over a complex trust and all fiduciary responsibilities. I almost said to my leader in BSF that there was no way I could commit to the Kingdom divided study, but the Lord told me that even though I could not do all of the work, He still wanted me to be in it. God was right! I cannot tell you how much I was blessed, and how much I learned and grew. I am now memorizing scriptures regularly, and spending daily time in the Word, and telling others about what I am doing in a life that has been very shaky and certainly out of my control. But, God tells me to keep my eyes on Him. Thank you for all you do in this ministry. I am excited to study the Book of John! By the grace of God, my brothers are still with us.
God promises that if I will diligently study the Bible HE will use it to increase my faith. So, I am so excited to resume my study on the Gospel of John. It is a Gospel account rich with beautiful imagery and theological significance. There is so much to learn about Jesus Christ on the Gospel of John. Where I once were filled with emptiness and discontent, I now can have a vibrant reason for living.
God bless everyone as they study God’s Word!
I just received the BSF book for the upcoming study of John. The study book is fantastic and I am so excited to be looking at John again, and seeing how much I have grown, and will continue grow, since the John study 7 years ago. BSF has been a huge blessing to me, I treasure the studies, the women, and most importantly God’s word and work in my life.
I enjoyed your comments on the study of John. When you about talk about him going through all his
trials and tribulations, he did not put the focus on himself but on the Lord Jesus. He is the one that
gives me peace that passeth all understanding. This will be my second time going through the study
of John. I know I will continue to learn more about who John is and also grow in my relationship with Jesus Christ. I love the gospel of John!
Thank you for this ‘lead’ into the next study. I’m looking forward to how this study and the Holy Spirit will encourage me to persevere in my faith.
Last year was my first study with BSF, and I’m happy to now be a part of the BSF family! I’ve never read a blog but I figured since it’s connected to BSF, I’d look into it — and I’m very glad I did. Thank you for the insight into John’s life and his writing. One helpful comment: The possessive of “Jesus” is “Jesus” with an apostrophe behind it: ” Jesus’ “. Blessings to Everyone.
Beautifully written! I’m excited for this study.
I am excited to study the book of John again. Great study!
Excited to study John this year
How do I get pass paying the Ups fee of 12$ to order the book of John ..I don’t want to download the book.I have a learning disability that It’s best if I use the book
Hi Wanda! In special cases, your local class leadership such as your CA can help you with this. If you do not have their contact information, you can find your class through join.bsfinternational.org and click “contact.” Thank you!
Thank you for sharing a beautiful message/encouragement to realize the important of studying John’s study this year. As I find myself reaching out prayerfully studying the teaching/listening to others enlightened my love for others as well.
Wonderful encouragement. You’re stoking the fire of my eagerness to study the Gospel of John in a couple months. Can’t wait!
I cannot wait to study and learn more about this “Disciple whom Jesus loved” so in my walk with HIM, I can learn his ways as well as also catch the eyes of my Lord and Saviour.
I am fairly new to BSF and am looking forward to this study on John.
This blog has opened my mind to learn even more of John’s gospel. It’s very enlightening
Great Article. Very Inspiring.
I loved this overview and back ground about John as a person. It will help me to study this year with new eyes.
Thank you for this insight into John’s life, I am looking forward to being enlightened by Holy Spirit to have greater understanding of the gospel of John, always one of my favorites. Thank you so much. God bless you all.
I love the pattern God has given to BSF for the study and application of His Word! I’m a grateful participant as well as a former leader.I love that BSF holds the Word of God in highest esteem and without compromise! We study God’s inerrant, treasured Word. I’m a little concerned by the statement in paragraph 4 which seems to take away from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit thru John. I’m sure you don’t intend for it to sound like man centered theology because I know this is absolutely totally in opposition to what BSF teaches. I have learned so much about the solid doctrines of God thru my study at BSF. For that, I am ever grateful!
Hi Deborah! We fully believe the Holy Spirit’s inspiration in everything John wrote:)
Really looking forward to the study of John
This blog comes at a time when I am doing a word study on some of the words that pertain to understanding what we have professed as belivers of Christ’s teachings and as committed doers of his word. Faithfulness or faith is included can wait to start the study of the book of John.
To God be the glory✝️♥️🙏🏼
Thank you for these reflections on John . I found them challenging as I am in the later years of life , and seek to know and to show that hope, freedom and peace that John demonstrated.
Will there be a online or zoom study?
Hi Mary! If you are currently in a BSF class, please reach out to your local leadership to see if they have online discussion groups. You can find your class contact through join.bsfinternational.org if you do not have it. If you are NOT already in a class and would like to join BSF Online, please visit bsfonline.org.
That was quite an inspirational blog. I am so looking forward to the study of John.
I’m so excited to dig into John’s gospel record! Something so familiar becomes “new.”
With each season of study, I have fellowshiped deeper in the Spirit. The accountability of my BSF study keeps me in the Word. I treasure the time.
Looking forward to this study so much!
Love learning more about John and Jesus! Woohoo…
I am so amazed how The Lord brings wisdom/ truth/ knowledge through the BSF staff, how these people God used then and continues through His words. How the lesson allows me to relate with the characters God used then and now, also, I wondered do you still use volunteers at headquarters for kitchen and house keeping? You can email me or direct me to the info
Hi Mary! Sadly we no longer use volunteers at HQ, at least for now. If that changes, we will let members know! Thank you for your heart to serve:) We would love if you would keep BSF staff in your prayers as a way to volunteer and support HQ!
Great comments on the Gospel of John. Always learning something new. Especially, in hindsight!!
Early Christian writings even suggest that John may been familiar with the three Gospels before choosing what to include in his own.*
John didn’t choose what to include in his gospel. God choose what John should include! Where’s the BSF editors?
Hi Kathy! We did not intend for these statements to convey that the Holy Spirit did not inspire John to write his gospel. Rather, we are commenting on how and when the Holy Spirit particularly inspired John to write his unique book!
Thank you for this article. Looking forward to studying Gospel of John again for my 3rd time at BSF. Growing ever closer to Him and being encouraged by my sisters in the Lord.
I joined BSF in 2015 it really came at a difficult time in my life were I needed to get grounded in God’s word more deeply. I am looking forward to this study of John this fall.
Dear Bennett,
Thank you for taking the time to write synopses of the Old and New Testament Books. I enjoyed your back brief on the Apostle John and others. My Wife (Nahid) has always enjoyed her BSF lessons and has grown in her leadership roles through her history in BSF.
Keep up the fine work.
Respectfully,
Michael T. Scahill
LTC(R), US Army Europe
In God I am truly blessed. Looking forward to the study of John.
Thankyou for the Inspirational and uplifting study of John the Beloved
Looking forward to another study of John, one of my favorite books of the Bible, this year. ❤️.
The Gospel of John is my favorite! I’m new to BSF and look forward to diving deep into the Gospel of John.
I’m so looking forward to studying the book of John, so I can become more inspired by his words of hope!
BSF offers everything I have always wanted in a Bible study. I can’t thank the Lord enough for bringing me to it! I love BSF.
The blog was very enlightening! I’m grateful. 🙏🏽🌼
I joined BSF in 2009 after my husband John had passed away. A friend asked me to join and I decided that I needed more time with God. I decided to continue after that year and I am still a part of it. God had a plan. I was only going to try it for the one year, but his plan was for me to continue. Since I started, I have lost my only child in 2019. I remarried in 2017 to a wonderful man and then he passed away December 2022. If not for Lord, where would I be. 🙏
Dear Louise, Praise God for your amazing faith. God bless you abundantly.
He alone is our unfailing anchor in the turbulent waters of life on this earth! Thank you for sharing how He continues to sustain you, Louise – your testimony encourages me & I’m sure others, as well. ((Hugs)) ♥️
Praying the God of comfort will comfort you today. Blessings my friend.
John was given a tough assignment of persevering faith to move through all the turbulent times in those early days. However, Jesus Christ met him in an extraordinary experience through the visions he saw of our Lord, He has certainly passed on to us as believers not only an understanding of what will happen in the future, with the guaranteed victory for the saints, but as well, reminds us the Spirit of our God uses not only people, but angels to accomplish His purposes, and protect us and they worship the Creator – in Revelation Ch 22:9, the angel says: for I am your fellow servant, of your brethren the prophets and of them who keep the sayings of this book: worship God. We are part of that great cloud of witnesses that follow the Lamb and worship Him in spirit and truth.
Thanks for sharing the insight of John’s hindsight. In Chinese “hindsight” is always derogatory, not commendatory.
Thank you for your comment, Howard! I am interested – would there be a better word to describe the same idea?
The crux of John’s study beautifully shared and inspired.
How God used John as he kept his focus on eternity is worth emulating as a follower of Christ to be called ‘beloved of Christ’
Holding on to the teachings of Christ may we grow in steadfast love, enduring faith and a hope that will help us through all turmoils
Reflective insights comes to mind when looking back at how God has been with me and all He has done. I am able to thank Him and have renewed hope for the future God has for me.
I’m looking forward to study John who aspired greatness but God led him to grow to desiring God increase and he decrease. I’m also looking forward to study about a life of hard times but he wrote giving hope instead of despair.
What time slots are open for this Bible Study?
Hi Grace! You can find a local BSF class near you at join.bsfinternational.org or you can search for an online class at bsfonline.org.
I look forward to learning more about how to remain faithful and uplifted in times of adversity.
This is a great article. Everyone needs to read before the Study.
Thank you. I’m looking forward to this study of hope. I want to be grounded in faith to help others grow with me.
If I could go back in time, I would not be a full-time working mom. If I could go back in time, I don’t want to get married so that I can be a full-time missionary.
Hi Kelly! I’m so glad you have a heart for serving God, like John. But being a full-time working mom is a service too! Praying that you see ways to serve God in your work and home this year.
I am excited to do the study of John. In my devotional I read Psalm 111:2 Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.
powerful summary of John’s perspective, thanks
Thank you for that very encouraging commentary on John. Looking forward to the John study.
I love BSF and the wonderful friends I have made. They have been a great support during the death of my husband
Loved this phrase in this blog -John anchored his identity in Christ. Looking forward to the study of John and learning how to persevere in adversity and grow in humility.
Hunger for more. Thank you BSF for enriching my life with God’s Word.
BSF has been a important source for Bible learning for me since 1979. I have met the best friends and learned God’s Word from dedicated ladies and friends teaching God’s Word.
So thankful for BSF
Thank you. God bless.
This blog whets my appetite for my third time to study John. While “third time” can imply repetition or boredom, I long to go through John again and uncover truths that will change knowledge to a more love relationship to my Jesus. Thank you for this blog!
Looking forward to studying the Gospel John. Pray that God reignites my spiritual growth and strengthens/deepens my faith through it from inside out.
I have learned so much more of God’s word thru BSF. I have gained a deeper understanding of Biblical times and drawn closer to the Lord. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I want to remain in BSF.
Very good brief on the importance & value of the Gospel of John. I have studied John 4 times, this will be my fifth time. Thank you.
Will make all the efforts to continue studying Bsf.
I so love BSF. I’m 75 but I learn something new every year. I’m looking forward to studying John again. One of my favorite books.
Looking forward to “studying John”. I just joined BSF in April 2023.
I am so looking forward to studying John! Thank you to all of the BSF staff for the wonderful in-depth bible studies.
I am so excited to be studying The Gospel of John.
Praying for some of my friends to join.
Love the Leadership of BSF
Can’t wait!! When will the study begin?

How can I order the study Book??
Please visit https://store.mybsf.org/.
Excited to attend BSF again and learn the book of John❤️
I wonder if any Christians died in AD 70. We read that the Christians fled to Pella but the unbelieving Jews remained.

Hi Judy! Are you asking if there are any online groups available for your class? If yes, contact your CA for more information. You can find their contact information by searching for your class at join.bsfinternational.org. You can also find a completely online class at bsfonline.org if you are not already part of a BSF class.
Bethany,
Looking forward to studying John. Can I get PDF word version so I can print my copies myself? Thankd
Hi Josephine – you can print from the BSF App or mybsf.org. Digital materials will become available in July.
Good article on remembering that He must be in the limelight, and not us. Thank you!
Your article has really encouraged me to begin NOW to ask the Lord to be preparing my heart to study John in September. I’ve been a BSFer since 1987. Thank you so much!!
Each time we read a scripture or a book of the Bible we learn more….about God, his word and his plan for his children .I desire to soak in more and more daily.
